Teens who delay driving licensure may not be subject to graduated driver licensing restrictions that are known to reduce crash risk. We explored the association of delay in licensure with driving while impaired (DWI) and riding with an impaired driver (RWI) among emerging adults.
Data from the NEXT Generation Health Study, starting with 10th grade (2009-2010), were analyzed. The outcome variables were Wave 7 (W7) self-reported DWI and RWI as dichotomous variables. The independent variable was delay in licensure. Covariates included sex, urbanicity, race/ethnicity, family structure, parent education, family affluence, teen's highest education, minimum legal drinking age laws, and onset age of alcohol use. Descriptive analysis and logistic regressions were conducted.
Of 2525 participants eligible for licensure, 887 reported a delay in licensure by 1-2years (38.9%, weighted) and 1078 by>2years (30.3% weighted) across 7 waves. In W7, 23.5% (weighted and hereafter, 5.6% once, 17.8% ≥twice) of participantsted driver licensing.
While in the overall sample, delayed licensure did not appear to be associated with DWI or RWI, our findings suggest that delayed licensure may be of concern to teen risk of DWI and RWI among African Americans and among those with lower educational attainment. Furthermore, as two-thirds of youth delayed licensure, more research is needed to determine whether this is more of a positive (i.e., protective) factor by reducing their exposure to crash risk or a negative (i.e., risk) factor due to their missing important driver safety stages of graduated driver licensing.
The inactivation capabilities of the two current commercially available pathogen inactivation (PI) systems for platelet components (PC), Mirasol and Intercept, were investigated by determination of the absence of viable bacteria at the end of shelf life by testing the entire contents of the PC by enrichment culture (terminal sterility).
A pool-and-split method was used, with two treated units and one untreated control per inoculum concentration. Pairs of PC bags were inoculated with a single bacterial species. Three concentrations (n=2 per concentration), which incremented tenfold, were tested initially based on published data from the manufacturer. Dependent on these results, the concentrations subsequently tested were either increased or decreased until the inactivation capability of the system was derived. Bacterial count was determined post-spiking, immediately prior to treatment (2h from spiking), immediately after treatment and at the end of shelf life (day seven). Enrichment culture was performed iening if treatment is performed at an appropriate time dependent on the inactivation capabilities of the system.
The inactivation capability of Intercept was greater than that of Mirasol. Inactivation capability (by terminal sterility) is the most meaningful measure to evaluate a PI system for bacteria, rather than logarithmic reduction assessed immediately after treatment by plate count. PI offers a possible alternative to bacterial screening if treatment is performed at an appropriate time dependent on the inactivation capabilities of the system.
Sobriety checkpoints have strong empirical and theoretical support as an intervention to reduce alcohol-involved motor vehicle crashes. The purpose of this study was to examine whether checkpoint size (the number of police officers) and checkpoint duration (the amount of time in operation) affect associations between individual checkpoints and subsequent alcohol-related crash incidence.
Queensland Police Service provided latitude-longitude coordinates and date and time data for all breath tests that occurred in Brisbane, Australia, from January 2012 to June 2018. We applied hierarchical cluster analysis to the latitude-longitude coordinates for breath tests, identifying checkpoints as clusters of ≥25 breath tests conducted by ≥3 breath testing devices over a duration of 3 to 8 hours. Generalized linear autoregressive moving average (GLARMA) models related counts of alcohol-involved motor vehicle crashes to the number of checkpoints conducted per week, as well as 1week prior and 2weeks prior.
A total of 3420 alcohol-related crashes occurred and 2069 checkpoints were conducted in Brisbane over the 6.5-year (339-week) study period. On average, checkpoints included a mean of 266.0 breath tests (SD=216.3), 16.4 devices (SD=13.7), and were 286.3 minutes in duration (SD=104.2). Each 10 additional checkpoints were associated with a 12% decrease in crash incidence at a lag of 1week (IRR=0.88; 95%CI 0.80, 0.97). We detected no differential associations according to checkpoint size or duration.
Sobriety checkpoints are associated with fewer alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes for around 1week. Checkpoint size and duration do not appear to affect this relationship.

Infertility permeates women's lives and is psychologically, socially and financially burdensome. This study aimed to describe women's experiences regarding infertility and explore factors that women find helpful to alleviate their fertility-related stressors. Using purposive sample, we conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with infertile women. Daurisoline Participants reported multiple infertility treatment-related stressors including (a) difficulty accessing infertility treatment due to financial issues, geographic disparities, and healthcare provider factors; (b) challenges during infertility treatment related to painful, embarrassing, confusing treatments, side effects, and healthcare providers' failures to fully address women's needs. The stories and findings add to a body of literature that elucidate significant stressors that women encounter in their fertility journey including a desire for empathetic, understandable, and effective treatment and support, and the crucial role of healthcare providers.
