How to Maintain a Frost Free Fridge and Freezer
Defrosting is not required with a frost-free fridge freezer. This can save you time, effort and electricity when compared to a traditional refrigerator/freezer.
Food that has been frozen can be damaged if ice crystals form on the packaging. These crystals can cause damage to the freezer or alter the texture of food.
Defrost
The process of defrosting your freezer isn't the most exciting or enjoyable but it's an essential aspect of maintaining the fridge and freezer. Each time you open the door of your freezer warm air infiltrates, causing moisture to condense and freeze on the interior surfaces. This frost interferes the freezer's ability to regulate temperature, causing it work harder and use more energy. best frost free fridge freezers can also affect the flavor and quality of food and cause freezer burn.
Defrosting a freezer on your own is the best choice however, it can take many hours. In a pinch using a hairdryer or handheld steam cleaner can help speed up the process. Just be sure to shut off and unplug the freezer, remove all frozen foods, and clean up any spills of water before you start working.
Make sure you have an extra towel, or a plastic liner, ready before you begin the defrosting procedure. This will absorb any water that might spill. It's a good idea also to empty the entire freezer to allow you to reorganize the food items that remain and dispose of expired or old items. When the defrosting process has been completed, be sure to thoroughly clean and dry the freezer prior to turning it off.
Close and open the freezer's door several times to increase the temperature. Remove check here and drawers to enable you to access the ice. You can also put some old towels or newspapers that are highly absorbent on the floor to soak any puddles that form from melting the ice.
When the ice is melting ensure you have an ice-cold spoon or plastic spatula in your kitchen to cut off any large chunks that have accumulated on the interior walls. Avoid using sharp objects like forks, knives or Ice picks when trying to break through the ice. This can cause damage and leaks into the freezer. Also, don't forget to clean and wash the drawers and shelves you can remove after the ice has been removed. After cleaning the freezer, plug it in and allow it to run for a couple of hours to return to normal temperatures.
Clean
Regular cleaning is the best way to prevent spores and food smells from accumulating. Throw away any produce that is spoiled or over its best. Wipe down all drawers and shelves with soapy water using a damp cloth (I use Seventh Generation Natural Dish Liquid). Then dry them. I also clean the freezer using a cloth that has been dipped in a solution of water and vinegar or baking soda. The stubborn stains can be removed using a non-scratch scrub brush. I like to clean the coils at the back of my fridge as well with the nozzle attachment. This removes all dust and pet hair that accumulates in difficult-to-access places.
You will not have to defrost your fridge with frost as frequently as you do with other models. Frost-free refrigerators have an automatic cooling mechanism that cools the food by moving cold air throughout the fridge and eliminates the necessity of manually defrosting the appliance. It is crucial to clean your refrigerator at least once per week. Remove any food items that have passed the expiration date, and take out any old bottles, jars and soy sauce packets.
To make the process of defrosting your freezer simpler, remove all the food from the freezer and put it in a freezer that is not used or cooler that has ice packs or in a box lined with blankets. During this process, you should protect the floor of your freezer with an old cloth. When the freezer is defrosted, you can remove any remaining ice using the help of a plastic scraper.
If your fridge is equipped with an automatic defrost system built-in, it will likely have an indicator light that lets you know it's time for a defrost cycle. Empty the freezer and set it on the counter to prevent losing frozen food during the defrost. Then, you can replenish the freezer with frozen items that have a long shelf life. You can then use an old towel to collect any water that drips out of the freezer as it melts.
Maintaining
If frost coats the evaporator coil, it will freeze and cause the fridge to work harder and use more energy. This is why maintaining it regularly is so important. This can be prevented by unplugging the refrigerator and cleaning the evaporator.
When the defrost is working properly, a layer should form on the evaporator in an uniform pattern. If there is an accumulation of ice on the evaporator that is not caused by an issue with defrost it could be a sign of a defective timer or defrost termination thermostat.
In older models, the return and supply air duct to and from the freezer may be blocked by dirt, pet hair, or food leftovers. This causes the compressor to work harder and creates lots of heat that will migrate into the refrigerator section cabinet and create warm temperatures there, especially around the doors of the freezer. Keeping the freezer door gasket free of any damage and ensuring that it is tight will lessen the chance of this happening.
The freezer's frequent opening can allow humid air into the appliance, resulting in an environment where ice and frost are more likely to form. Keeping the freezer tightly closed may help, but it's not the only solution to eliminate all issues with frost and ice.
Clean regularly the evaporator drainage tube to make sure it is not blocked with food residues or ice. This can be done with handheld vacuum cleaners or a special coil cleaner for refrigerators (usually with a brush which can be inserted into difficult to reach areas).
Keep the freezer free of obstructions that could block air flow or the condenser. To remove food residues and to prevent odours from forming, clean the interior walls and shelves using a mixture of hot dish soap, hot water or baking powder. Vents for air between refrigerator and freezer compartments must not be blocked since this could result in poor circulation of air, which could increase humidity in the appliance.
Repair
There are a variety of reasons your fridge freezer that is frost-free may not be working correctly. Most of them are simple and simple to fix, however some require the assistance of a professional. The majority of the time, the issue is caused by something that prevents air from flowing into and from the freezer section of the unit. This could be due to the over-packaging of food items, clogged ventilation gaps and/or keeping the door open for too long.
It is important to disconnect your refrigerator prior to performing any repairs or maintenance. This will reduce the risk of electric shocks and allows any accumulated frost to melt naturally.
If the refrigerator is unable to cool it could be because of an issue with the defrost system. In this type of refrigerator and freezer, a heater constantly turned on to melt any frost that has formed on the evaporator coils. The melted frost flows down a drain tube into a pan in the back of the freezer, and eventually evaporates into the surrounding air. The defrost timer may be inoperable and needs to be replaced.
It's also possible that a bad seal is preventing cold air from entering the freezer section of your refrigerator. You can fix this by cleaning the seal with warm water and soap. Check to see if there are any items blocking the freezer vents or resting against the back wall of the refrigerator.
If the gasket is worn or damaged You can try to replace it. Many major appliance manufacturers provide replacement parts, including freezer gaskets. It is important to keep in mind that only a professional with a license should replace a freezer gasket.
You may also be experiencing problems with the evaporator which circulates air in the freezer section of your refrigerator. You'll hear a click sound when the fan is switched on. This is because the ice that covers the evaporator coils is too thick and is impinging on the fan's blades. This is an issue that requires to be spotted by a trained professional.
