Sudah ada lima generasi komputer sejak pertama kali komputer ditemukan. Fungsi awal komputer adalah membantu perhitungan aritmatika. Sesuai perkembangan zaman komputer semakin canggih dan tidak hanya digunakan untuk melakukan operasi hitung aritmatika tetapi juga digunakan untuk komunikasi.
Komputer generasi pertama memiliki bentuk yang sangat besar dan memiliki berpuluh ribu tabung udara. Komputer jenis kedua atau generasi kedua sudah memiliki transistor untuk penguat sinyal. Generasi ketiga sudah dapat melakukan multitasking dan processing serta kapasitas penyimpanan yang lebih besar, dan daya listrik lebih hemat. Pada generasi ke empat sudah memakai chip untuk memori komputer. Dan komputer generasi kelima memiliki unsur artificial intelligence dan berbasis GUI. Komputer yang kita gunakan adalah komputer generasi kelima. Ukuran fisiknya lebih kecil dan lebih canggih dibanding generasi-generasi sebelumnya.
