Neural correlates of enhanced inductive thought potential throughout abacus-trained children: A new regenerating condition fMRI study.
7~- 1.3). These findings provided new molecular insights that VC can significantly improve the oxidation of organic matter and the preservation of nitrogen. Graphical abstract.Fluoride is widely distributed in the environment and has been associated with the development of different health hazards in animals and humans. Argan oil (AO) is a natural vegetable oil with various beneficial pharmacological effects. This study was designed to investigate the potential protective effect of AO supplementation as pre-treatment or co-treatment on sodium fluoride (NaF)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 50) were randomly assigned to one of five equal groups control group, AO-treated group (6 ml/kg b.wt.), NaF-treated group (20 mg/kg b.wt.), pre-treated group, and co-treated group. All rats were daily administered by oral gavage for duration of 30 days. The results showed that AO administration significantly improved renal function and antioxidant status and decreased the lipid peroxidation in NaF-treated rats. Additionally, AO normalized the renal levels of inflammatory markers and mRNA expression level of the intermediate filament protein genes, indicating NaF-induced podocyte damage was ameliorated. Histopathological evaluation of the kidney confirmed the before mentioned biochemical results. AO counteracted the nephrotoxic effects of NaF in rats particularly at co-exposure. These results concluded that AO administration exhibited a significant nephroprotective effect against renal injury induced by NaF in rats.A protocol for an ultra-rapid screening toxicity test is described using the rotifer Philodina acuticornis/roseola. The test can be executed in 30 min starting from the rehydration of desiccated life stages called tuns. Philodina tuns remain viable for years when maintained dry and at low temperature. They are very useful for conducting toxicity tests because the test animals do not require cultivation and are available to initiate tests anytime and anywhere. The swimming/crawling activity of rehydrated Philodina tuns is used as an endpoint to compare activity in control dilution water with inhibition of activity in an environmental sample. The Rotifer Activity Inhibition Test (RAIT) estimates toxicity semi-quantitatively using four toxicity categories non-toxic, slightly toxic, very toxic, and 100% toxic. As proof of principle, RAIT has been tested on environmental samples from a variety of habitats and RAIT results have been compared with those obtained from traditional toxicity tests with bacteria, algae, Daphnia, and fish. Broad congruence between the effect signals of the rapid RAIT screening test and traditional assays has been found for river surface waters, industrial wastewaters, and sludge leachates from waste water treatment plants. Rotifers are an important group of animals in aquatic and soil food webs, and RAIT is a welcome new method for simple, ultra-rapid, and low-cost toxicity screening with a representative of this ecologically important group. For several decades air pollution has been recognized to hit drastically the skin of human body. BAY-985 mw Air pollutants predominantly accountable for aging, oxidative damage, and inflammatory allergic reactions led to psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, and skin cancer owing to the impaired functions of DNA, proteins, and lipid biomolecules. Elevated air pollution and its detrimental effects along with variations in physiological parameters of the skin are verily the scaffold for anti-pollution assertions and could be recognized as markers. The present article encompasses the salient features of air pollution and UV radiations besides dreadful effects on human skin physiological parameters and some anti-pollution approaches."Swimming across the Pearl River" is an annual large-scale sporting event with great popularity in Guangzhou. To reduce the risk of swimmers' exposure to various contaminants in the Pearl River during swimming activities, the local government limits direct sewage and effluent discharge from urban channels during the event. However, the impact of discharge reduction on some contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), bisphenol analogues (BPs), and triclosan remains unknown. In the present study, the concentrations of CECs, as well as ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), dissolved organic carbon, and chemical oxygen demand, were measured in aqueous and suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the Guangzhou reaches of the Pearl River. The concentration ranges of sixteen OPFRs, eight BPs, and triclosan were 21.2-91.0, 8.46-37.3, and 1.47-5.62 ng/L, respectively, in aqueous samples, and 25.2-492, 14.0-86.3, and 0.69-17.5 ng/g, respectively, in SPM samples. Hydrophobic and π-π interactions could be contributing to the distribution of CECs. Principal component analysis indicated that consumer materials, manufacturing, and domestic sewage might be the main sources of the CECs. In addition, our study showed that the concentrations of CECs did not change considerably before or after discharge reduction activities, although NH3-N showed a substantial decrease following pollution control measure. The results demonstrated that temporary reductions of contaminant discharges to the Pearl River had only limited effect on the levels of CECs. Further research is needed to investigate the distributions and potential health risks of CECs in the Pearl River.Copper (Cu), with many documented cases of Cu toxicity in agriculture lands, is becoming an increasingly common issue in and elsewhere in China. However, fibrous crop such as jute is being used as phytoremediation candidate in Cu-contaminated soils due to its huge biomass. A pot experiment was conducted using four different varieties (HT, C-3, GC, and SH) of jute grown in highly Cu-contaminated soil (2221 mg kg-1), collected from Hubei Province, China. Results from this study showed that C-3 and HT were more resistant to Cu stress, while GC and SH had a serious effect due to high concentration of Cu and a significant decrease in growth and biomass. Furthermore, Cu in roots, leaves, stem core, and bast were higher in C-3 and HT compared with GC and SH. Likewise, at post-harvesting stage, maximum Cu concentration from Cu-contaminated soil was extracted by C-3 and HT while small amount was accumulated by GC and SH. The high content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the leaves of GC and SH indicated that Cu induced oxidative damage while the antioxidative enzyme activities of superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) were increased to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed during oxidative stress in the plants.
