Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy is an increasingly popular treatment for medically intractable epilepsy. During a review of our cases, we noted that one of the senior authors give patients 1 week of antibiotic prophylaxis after VNS surgery while the other does not. We reviewed our experience with postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis after VNS surgery.
We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients from January 2009 to September 2018 who had undergone surgery for VNS therapy, including generator replacement. The office and operative notes were reviewed to obtain the indications and operative details for VNS placement.
A total of 570 operations were reviewed, 232 of which were primary implantations and 338 were revisions. The indication was intractable epilepsy in all cases. A total of 5 infections occurred, 4 in the group with postoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and 1 in the group without. The difference was not statistically significant.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are likely to develop severe side effects, which may persist long after the end of treatment and may be responsible for decrease patient's quality of life. The M.D. Anderson Symptom Inventory- Head and Neck Module (MDASI-HN) is a questionnaire developed to detect patient's symptom burden. To conduct an Italian language psychometric validation of MDASI-HN among Italian HNC patients on behalf of the Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO) Head and Neck Working Group.
To assess construct validity, it was performed a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with both a five-factor solution and three-factor solution, which were compared by a chi-square difference test. The concurrent validity was evaluated by the correlation with EORTC QLQ-C30 and HN35, and it was also assessed known-group validity. The internal consistency was tested using Cronbach's alpha coefficient.
In total 166 patients (71.7% male) were included in the study, most of patients (56.2%) had an oropharynx cancer and received definitive chemoradiotherapy (51.2%). The chi-square difference test was significant and indicated that the five-factor solution fits the data better than the other one. Regarding CFA, all items had a significant saturation with their respective factors; besides, significant and strong correlations were found among factors. Novel imaging measurements of placental development are difficult to validate due to the invasive nature of gold-standard procedures. Animal studies have been important in validation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in invasive preclinical studies, as they allow for controlled experiments and analysis of multiple time-points during pregnancy. This study characterises the longitudinal diffusion and perfusion properties of sheep placentomes using MRI, measurements that are required for future validation studies.
Pregnant ewes were anaesthetised for a MRI session on a 3T scanner. Placental MRI was used to classify placentomes morphologically into three types based on their shape and size at two gestational ages. To validate classification accuracy, placentome type derived from MRI data were compared with placentome categorisation results after delivery. Diffusion-Weighted MRI and T2-relaxometry were used to measure a broad range of biophysical properties of the placentomes.
MRI morphological classification results showed consistent gestational age changes in placentome shape, as supported by post-delivery gold standard data. The mean apparent diffusion coefficient was significantly higher at 110 days gestation than at late gestation (~140 days; term, 150 days). Mean T2 was higher at mid gestation (152.2±58.1ms) compared to late gestation (127.8ms±52.0). Significantly higher perfusion fraction was measured in late gestation placentomes that also had a significantly higher fractional anisotropy when compared to the earlier gestational age.

These measurements are essential to support future validation measurements of placental MRI techniques.This work contributes to the ongoing work aiming at confirming benthic foraminifera as a biological quality element. In this study, benthic foraminifera from intertidal and transitional waters from the English Channel/European Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean Sea were assigned to five ecological groups using the weighted-averaging optimum with respect to TOC of each species. It was however not possible to assign typical salt marsh species due to the presence of labile and refractory organic matter that hampers TOC characterization. Tests of this study species' lists with Foram-AMBI on two independent datasets showed a significant correlation between Foram-AMBI and TOC, confirming the strong relation between foraminifera and TOC. For one of the validation datasets, associated macrofaunal data were available and a significant correlation was found between the foraminiferal Foram-AMBI and the macrofaunal AMBI. The here proposed lists should be further tested with sensitivity-based indices in different European regional settings.
