Hematological, biochemical and hematopoietic effects of therapeutic doses of two antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and gentamicin (GEN), in clinically healthy common carp juveniles were studied. The fish were divided into four groups controls 1 and 2 (untreated or injected with 0.6% NaCl solution), and two groups treated with antibiotics (orally with 75 mg/kg OTC four times every two days or injected with a single dose (4 mg/kg) of GEN dissolved in 0.6% NaCl). Blood and head kidneys were sampled from all fish 3 days post-treatments for hematological, biochemical and hematopoietic tissue analyses. No major alterations in the values of hematological and serum biochemical parameters occurred following administration of OTC or GEN. Glucose concentrations were significantly lower in both groups of fish subjected to injections (Control 2 and GEN), while the oxidative metabolic activity of phagocytes increased in the antibiotic-treated groups (significantly in OTC). More alterations were observed in hematopoietic tissue. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed that G caused a significant increase in the rate of cell proliferation (PCNA-positive cells) and an increase in the frequency of apoptotic cells (caspase-positive). The frequency of lymphoid lineage decreased, which was related to a decrease in the abundance of mature lymphocytes in GEN-treated fish. Percentages of neutrophilic lineage were significantly elevated in OTC and GEN groups compared to controls. The obtained results showed no considerable hematotoxicity or hepatotoxicity of therapeutic doses of OTC and GEN to carp. The production and applications of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have increased despite evidence that MWNTs can be toxic. Recently, we reported that the binding of Pluronic® F-108 (PF108)-coated carboxylated MWNTs (C-MWNTs) to macrophages is inhibited by class A scavenger receptors (SR-As) antagonists (R. Wang et al., 2018. Nanotoxicology 12677-690). The current study investigates the uptake of PF108-coated MWNTs by macrophages lacking SR-A1 and by CHO cells that ectopically express SR-A1. Macrophages without SR-A1 failed to take up C-MWNTs and CHO cells that expressed SR-A1 did take up C-MWNTs, but not pristine MWNTs (P-MWNTs) or amino-functionalized MWNTs (N-MWNTs). The dependence of C-MWNT uptake on SR-A1 is strong evidence that SR-A1 is a receptor for C-MWNTs. selleck chemicals The consequences of SR-A1-dependent C-MWNT accumulation on cell viability and phagocytic activity in macrophages were also studied. C-MWNTs were more toxic than P-MWNTs and N-MWNTs in cell proliferation and colony formation tests. C-MWNTs reduced surface SR-A1 levels in RAW 264.7 cells and impaired phagocytic uptake of three known SR-A1 ligands, polystyrene beads, heat-killed E. coli, and oxLDL. Altogether, results of this study confirmed that SR-A1 receptors are important for the selective uptake of PF108-coated C-MWNTs and that accumulation of the C-MWNTs impairs phagocytic activity and cell viability in macrophages.A generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine)-co-poly(ethylenedioxy thiophene) (G1PPT-co-PEDOT) star copolymer, which exhibits a strong optical absorption over a broad range in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) region and with good electro/conductive properties, was chemically prepared for the first time. Synthesis of the star copolymer, G1PPT-co-PEDOT was confirmed by spectroscopic studies. Indeed, the disappearance of the very high intensity bands, C-H bending at α-position (687 cm-1), and C=N stretching (1620 cm-1) in the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of G1PPT-co-PEDOT, which were initially present in the spectrum of the thiolated starting material, G1PPT, confirmed copolymerization. Furthermore, a large bathochromic shift in the onset wavelength of the UV-Vis absorbance spectra from 367 nm in G1PPT to 674 nm in G1PPT-co-PEDOT further attests of successful copolymerization. The electrochemical analysis of G1PPT-co-PEDOT achieved a highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level value of 5.3 eV, which is reminiscent of the value for an ideal electron-donor material. Photoluminescence quenching of up to 82% was observed in solution blends of the G1PPT-co-PEDOT star copolymer and N,N'-diisopropyl naphthalene diimide (NDI). This demonstrates the occurrence of photoinduced intermolecular charge transfer (PICT) from the electron-donating G1PPT-co-PEDOT to the electron accepting NDI, a good property, beneficial for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.Recent progress in rotational sensor technology has made it possible to directly measure rotational ground-motion induced by seismic waves. When combined with conventional inertial seismometer recordings, the new sensors allow one to locally observe six degrees of freedom (6DOF) of ground-motion, composed of three orthogonal components of translational motion and three orthogonal components of rotational motion. The applications of such 6DOF measurements are manifold-ranging from wavefield characterization, separation, and reconstruction to the reduction of non-uniqueness in seismic inverse problems-and have the potential to revolutionize the way seismic data are acquired and processed. However, the seismological community has yet to embrace rotational ground-motion as a new observable. The aim of this paper is to give a high-level introduction into the field of 6DOF seismology using illustrative examples and to summarize recent progress made in this relatively young field. It is intended for readers with a general background in seismology. In order to illustrate the seismological value of rotational ground-motion data, we provide the first-ever 6DOF processing example of a teleseismic earthquake recorded on a multicomponent ring laser observatory and demonstrate how wave parameters (phase velocity, propagation direction, and ellipticity angle) and wave types of multiple phases can be automatically estimated using single-station 6DOF processing tools. Python codes to reproduce this processing example are provided in an accompanying Jupyter notebook.Food allergies are increasing at an alarming rate, with 6.5% of the general population affected. It has been hypothesized that the increase in allergies stems from the "hygiene hypothesis". The gut microbiome, a collection of microbiota and their genetic contents from the gastrointestinal tract, has been shown to play a part in the development of food allergies. The Food and Drug Administration requires all regulated food companies to clearly state an inclusion of the major, or "big eight" food allergens on packaging. This review is to provide information on the significant advancements related to the gut microbiome and each of the eight major food allergies individually. Establishment of causal connection between the microbiome and food allergies has uncovered novel mechanisms. New strategies are discussed to prevent future sensitization and reaction through novel treatments involving functional additives and dietary changes that target the microbiome.
