The efficacy of aflibercept plus 5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) therapy has been demonstrated in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in global and Japanese clinical trials. However, a practical biomarker to predict its efficacy is lacking.

This was a single-institution retrospective study of 21 patients with mCRC consecutively treated with aflibercept plus FOLFIRI from March 2018 to July 2019. We investigated the association and predictive value of pretreatment blood inflammation and immune-based scores, including the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-monocyte ratio, using their median values as cut-offs, in regard to disease control (DC), progression-free (PFS), and overall (OS) survival.

The median number of aflibercept treatment courses was seven (range=2-17). The median follow-up time was 391 days. We hypothesized that improved functional outcome after preservation rhinoplasty can be validated by radiological analyses.

In this retrospective study, five patients were included. Radiological assessment was evaluated by cone-beam computed tomography. Patient satisfaction regarding nasal function was evaluated by a Likert scale from 0 to 10 (0=poor result; 10=very satisfied).

After a mean follow-up of 5±1 months (range=4-6 months), significantly improved function was noted by all patients, with a mean Likert scale of 9.2±0.45 (preoperative score=2.8±0.8, p=0.0079). These results are in line with the radiological results, showing an improved internal nasal valve angle (preoperative=26.2°±1.8° vs. postoperative=32.3°±1.2°, p=0.02).

Head and neck cancers account for 8% of all cancer cases worldwide. However, identifying the optimal treatment for recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer (R/MHNSCC) has been challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and prognostic factors of the outcome of patients with R/MHNSCC who were treated with weekly cetuximab and paclitaxel (Cmab-PTX).

Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are associated with the efficacy of immune-checkpoint inhibitors in patients with melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer. We therefore evaluated the relationship between irAEs and nivolumab efficacy against metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

The medical records of 53 consecutive patients were reviewed and analyzed.

Median overall survival was significantly better in patients who showed irAEs at any time compared to patients without irAEs (p=0.013). We identified irAEs in 24 of 53 patients (45.3%), including four patients (7.5%) with grade 3 events. Multivariate analysis also revealed that risk factors for the onset of irAEs were positively associated with a platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio <156 before nivolumab treatment (p=0.006).

Vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), an important angiogenic factor, has been reported to effect cancer growth and development. Recent reports indicated that anti-VEGF therapy has an important effect of enhancing anti-tumor immunity in various cancers. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between VEGF-A expression and immunological factors, including programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) and the degrees of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in breast cancer.

This study enrolled 97 cases with invasive breast cancer who had undergone surgery without preoperative therapy. The grades of stromal-TILs were evaluated using the criteria of the International Working Group for TILs in breast cancer low, intermediate, and high. VEGF-A and PD-L1 positivity were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. The relationship between VEGF-A expression and the expression of PD-L1 and TILs was investigated.

Among the 97 cases, 37 (38.1%) had positive VEGF-A expression in the breast tumor. We divided the cases in two groups based on the VEGF-A expression levels.
