The PROCESS Guidelines were first published in 2016 and were last updated in 2018. They provide a structure for reporting surgical case series in order to increase reporting robustness and transparency, and are used and endorsed by authors, journal editors and reviewers alike. In order to drive forwards reporting quality, they must be kept up to date. As such, we have updated these guidelines via a DELPHI consensus exercise.

The updated guidelines were produced via a DELPHI consensus exercise. Members from the previous DELPHI group were again invited, alongside editorial board members and peer reviewers of the International Journal of Surgery and the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports. It is capable of using a wide variety of substrates, including carbohydrate oligomers, and has been developed for the industrial production of ethanol. In this study, P. thermoglucosidasius NCIMB11955 has been engineered to produce the sesquiterpene τ-muurolol by introduction of a heterologous mevalonate pathway constructed using genes from several thermophilic archaea together with a recently characterised thermostable τ-muurolol synthase. P. thermoglucosidasius naturally uses the methylerythritol phosphate pathway for production of the terpene precursor, isopentenyl pyrophosphate, while archaea use a version of the mevalonate pathway. By introducing the orthogonal archaeal pathway it was possible to increase the flux through to sesquiterpene biosynthesis. Construction of such a large metabolic pathway created problems with genetic vector introduction and stability, so recombinant plasmids were introduced by conjugation, and a thermostable serine integrase system was developed for integration of large pathways onto the chromosome. Finally, by making the heterologous pathway maltose-inducible we demonstrate that the new strain is capable of using waste bread directly as an autoinduction carbon source for the production of terpenes in a consolidated bioprocess.
In cancer patients, cigarette smoking is causally linked with increased mortality. We examined the relationship between smoking status at the time of diagnosis and cancer mortality to help estimate the scope of smoking cessation services required to meet the needs of cancer patients.

We studied the ten most common cancers in Massachusetts, 2008-2013 including 175,489 incident cases and used smoking status at the time of diagnosis to provide smoking prevalence. We calculated adjusted hazard ratios of all-cause mortality comparing smoker subgroups.

Smoking prevalence was more than threefold higher for lung cancer and more than twofold higher for head and neck cancer and bladder cancer than in the general population. Cancer cases who smoked at the time of diagnosis had a higher adjusted mortality rate than cancer cases who were former smokers. The three sites with the highest increased hazard ratios comparing current smokers with former smokers were cancers of the thyroid (HR=1.67, 95% CI 1.14-2.45), head and neck (HR=1.65, 95% CI 1.39-1.95), and prostate (HR=1.60, 95% CI 1.36-1.90).

Clinical heterogeneity is a defining feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This includes heterogeneity of implicated genes, etiological pathways, neurocognitive mechanisms, behavioral characteristics, comorbid conditions, and developmental trajectories. It is not surprising that children with ASD also vary greatly in their response to interventions. A better understanding of which children benefit from which intervention is critical to ensure that each child has access to the most effective intervention, delivered at optimal intensity and implemented within a context that is most conducive to learning/generalization (eg, home, preschool). Evidence-based strategies to individualize intervention programs can guide parents and clinicians as they consider different intervention options throughout development.1 The study that is the focus of this editorial expands the available literature in 2 important ways. First, the authors evaluate predictors of treatment response across multiple intervention approaches. Second, their results highlight the conceptual and practical distinction between child characteristics that predict outcome and child characteristics that predict treatment response.
