Psychiatric comorbidities and hepatitis C were common in the IDU group (51% and 39%, respectively), and 31% of IDU patients were uninsured. INTRODUCTION The objective of this study was to evaluate tracheal reactivity induced by a biodegradable polydioxanone tracheal stent. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-two rabbits were divided into 3 groups assigned to different survival times (30, 60 and 90days post-implantation). A biodegradable stent was implanted in each animal, except for 1 of each group (negative control). Implantation was performed through a small tracheotomy under fluoroscopic control. CT and histopathological studies were scheduled at the end of survival times. RESULTS No animal died during the procedure or follow-up. The stent had disappeared in 100% of the cases at 90days, in 50% at 60days, and in none at 30days. CT studies revealed a greater tracheal wall thickness at 30days than at 60 and 90days (1.60±0.41mm in the central part of the stent versus 1.11±0.18 and 0.94±0.11; P=.007, respectively). No granulomas were observed on histopathology. Some degree of histological changes were noted at 30days, which had reduced at 60 and 90days. Differences were also found in both CT and histology between animals in which the stent was present and animals in which it had degraded. CONCLUSIONS Polydioxanone stents produce a mild reaction that reverts with tracheal degradation. The use of these biodegradable stents in benign tracheal disease is promising. BACKGROUND Concern about adverse events following immunization is frequently cited by both those who receive or decline vaccines. Neurological adverse events are especially concerning. OBJECTIVES Our aim was to detect associations between seasonal influenza vaccination and the occurrence of severe anesthesia/paresthesia or severe headaches. METHODS Data were analyzed from the Canadian National Vaccine Safety network. Events occuring on days 0-7 were self-reported and prevented daily activity, led to school or work absenteeism, or required medical attention. Controls were the previous year's vaccinees; events in controls were collected prior to the start of the influenza vaccination program of each year (2012/13 through 2016/17). Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the association between seasonal influenza vaccination and the occurrence of anesthesia/paresthesia or severe headaches. RESULTS The total sample was 107,565 for investigating anesthesia/paresthesia and 97,420 for investigating severe headaches. Anesthesia/paresthesia was reported by 104/107,565 (0.10%) participants; 63/69,129 (0.09%) vaccinees and 41/38,436 (0.11%) controls (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 0.89; 95% CI = 0.60, 1.32). Severe headaches were reported by 1361/97,420 (1.40%) participants; 907/61,463 (1.48%) vaccinees and 454/35,957 (1.26%) controls (aOR = 1.21; 95% CI = 1.08, 1.36). No specific vaccine product was associated with severe headaches. CONCLUSIONS Our study found no association between severe anesthesia/paresthesia and seasonal influenza vaccination. While there was an association with severe headaches as an adverse event following influenza vaccination, the rates of these events are similar to rates reported from clinical trials and are not a cause for additional concern. AIM The study aim was to explore adolescents' with co-existing ADHD and medical disorder (MD) perceptions of everyday life and support from parents and healthcare professionals. DESIGN AND METHODS In this qualitative study, 10 adolescents aged 13-17 years diagnosed with ADHD and a MD were included from a general pediatric hospital clinic and a child and adolescent psychiatric hospital clinic. Data obtained through semi-structured interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS The adolescents' perceptions were categorized into four themes 1) ADHD perceived as part of the adolescent's self-understanding - yet with daily frustrations, 2) MD perceived as an interruption in everyday life, 3) ADHD and MD - an overlooked dual task, and 4) the need for supportive relationships in navigating ADHD and MD. CONCLUSION Living with co-existing ADHD and MD is a complex dual task, as ADHD and MD interfere with each other in everyday life. However, the adolescents overlook the dual task as they believe their difficulties would be resolved if the MD was eliminated. Moreover, supportive relationships are essential in navigating the complexities in living with co-existing ADHD and MD. Nevertheless, the adolescents take a passive role in the encounters with the healthcare professionals, whereas they are more active in encounters with peers, parents and teachers. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Healthcare professionals treating and caring for adolescents with co-existing ADHD and MD need interventions facilitating patient involvement in a patient-centered approach to support both adolescents and healthcare professionals in recognizing the dual task of having co-existing ADHD and MD. BACKGROUND The use of temporary mechanical circulatory support (tMCS) during arrhythmia is increasing, although available evidence for this indication is limited, with significant gaps of knowledge regarding appropriate timing, management and configuration. This systematic review sought to analyze the use of tMCS in patients with life-threatening arrhythmia. METHODS A systematic literature search identified 2529 references published until September 2019. Adult and pediatric patients diagnosed with all kind of life-threatening arrhythmia were included. tMCS was primarily compared to conventional non-tMCS therapies. Primary outcome measure was in-hospital or 30-day mortality. RESULTS 19 non-randomized studies were selected, including 2465 adult and 82 pediatric patients. Primary outcome in tMCS patients varied widely (4-62%) with differences based on the use of prophylactic tMCS (4-21%) or rescue tMCS (58-62%). A substantial mortality benefit was observed among high-risk patients, as identified with PAINESD risk score or suffering from electrical storm and treated with prophylactic tMCS.
