In all the subjects cIMT was measured with color Doppler by a vascular surgeon. Differences in the means of the variables were tested by ANOVA. Based on the IDEFICS criteria, 32 subjects were affected by MetS (14..3%), 66 were considered MUO (29.4%) and 126 MHO (56.3%). Comparison of mean cIMT highlighted a significant difference (p less then 0.05) between the groups of obese children (MHO, MUO and MetS) and controls for both carotid arteries. We did not find significative difference in the value of cIMT in MHO, MUO and MetS subjects, and all groups showed cIMT value higher compared to cIMT of the controls.
There are many studies, which demonstrate that morbid obesity is associated with an increase in Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels. However, the effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) procedure on postoperative TSH levels is not clear. This study aims to evaluate the effect of weight loss after LSG procedure on TSH levels in euthyroid patients with morbid obesity.
159 Euthyroid patients who applied for an LSG procedure (93.7% female, with a mean age of 34.18±10.01 years, BMI 43.2±6.82 kg/m2) were retrospectively analyzed for the study. learn more The parameters used in the analysis were their serum free T3 levels (fT3), free T4 levels (fT4), and TSH levels preoperatively and at 6 months after surgery. The postoperative correlation between TSH and BMI (Body Mass Index), % EWL (Percent Excess Weight Loss), and % TWL (Total Weight Loss) levels were evaluated.
Mean BMI change from 43.2±6.82 kg/m2 to 30.48±5.63 kg/m2 (p<0.001), 6 months after LSG, was associated with a mean reduction in the TSH from 2 correlation with BMI, no statistically significant correlation was found with % EWL and % TWL.
Dementia is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a progressive decline in multiple cognitive domains. Individual and/or environmental risk factors, i.e., aging, are involved in its pathogenesis. It is possible that shift and night works, affecting circadian rhythms, may contribute to the occurrence/progression of the disease. Therefore, aim of this review was to provide an overview on the possible association between shift or night work and cognitive decline.
A systematic review of literature studies available in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases, addressing the possible relationship between shift or night work and dementia was performed.
Not-homogeneous findings emerged from the revised studies. Some results supported a positive association between shift work and increased risk of dementia, although with a not unique evidence concerning the role of night work schedules and the consequent circadian misalignment in disease pathogenesis. Cardiometabolic disorders, underlying lifest, the several and different work schedules analyzed, together with the possible co-exposure to other occupational risk factors prevent to draw conclusions on shift work-dementia relationship. Further research should confirm such association and the causal relation with early cognitive alterations in order to guide suitable occupational risk assessment, as well as to promote healthy lifestyle and occupational management strategies, with the ultimate goal of preventing cognitive decline of shift workers. This may overall support the active aging of the workforce while providing benefits for the public health system.
To investigate the clinical efficacy of combination of mouse nerve growth factor (NGF) and nimodipine in the treatment of neonatal intracranial hemorrhage (NICH) and its effect on plasma platelet-activating factor (PAF), C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), and neurological function.
A total of 90 infants with severe ICH admitted to our hospital from December 2016 to December 2018 were enrolled for retrospective study. According to different treatment schemes, they were assigned into 2 groups group A (n=40) treated with mouse NGF plus nimodipine; group B (n=50) treated with nimodipine. The recovery time, serum indexes (PAF, MMP-2, CNP), neurological function (neonatal behavioral neurological assessment (NBNA) score), complications, and total effective rate of patients were recorded, and the satisfaction degree of family members was statistically analyzed.
Patients in group A showed shorter recovery time, down-regulated PAF and MMP-2, evidently up-regulated CNP, and significantly increased NBNA score after one/two weeks of treatment, as well as fewer complications, higher total effective rate and higher satisfaction of family members.
To sum up, the combination of mouse NGF and nimodipine achieves good clinical efficacy in NICH, which down-regulates plasma PAF and MMP-2, up-regulates CNP, and improves neurological function. Therefore, it is suitable for clinical promotion.

To detect the expressions of tumor necrosis factor-α-induced protein-8-like 2 (TIPE2) and tissue factor (TF) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma (BA), and to analyze their associations with changes in inflammatory factors and T lymphocytes.
A total of 59 patients with BA treated in our hospital from February 2018 to April 2019 were selected as objects, including 30 cases in the acute exacerbation phase (BA group) and 29 in the remission phase (RE group). During the same period, 28 people receiving physical examinations were selected as healthy controls (Control group). The proportion of eosinophils in the sputum and the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) level were detected in each subject. Blood samples were collected in patients of BA group and Control group, aiming to isolate PBMCs. Then, the messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of TIPE2 and TF in PBMCs were determined via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Serum lto that of RE group.
In patients with acute exacerbation of BA, the expression of TIPE2 in PBMCs declined, while that of TF rose, which were negatively correlated with each other. Moreover, the proportion of Th1 cells declined in patients with acute exacerbation of BA, indicating that it is associated with the lung function, inflammatory level and proportion of eosinophils.
