The resistant phenotype of S. sessilis was highly resistant to clopyralid (over 225-fold). It was also cross-resistant to dicamba, MCPA and picloram but not mecoprop. The level of resistance to dicamba was high (7-14-fold) but much lower (2-3-fold) for both MCPA and picloram. The phenotype was morphologically distinct from its susceptible counterpart. Individuals of the clopyralid-resistant phenotype had fewer lobes on their leaves and were slightly larger compared to the susceptible phenotype. Resistant individuals also had a larger leaf area and greater root dry weight than the susceptible plants. An evaluation of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions confirmed that clopyralid-resistant phenotypes are conspecific with S. sessilis. In summary, the cross-resistance to several auxinic herbicides in this S. sessilis phenotype greatly reduces chemical options for controlling it; thus, other integrated management practices may be needed such as using turfgrass competition to reduce weed germination. However, the morphological differences between resistant and susceptible plants make it easy to see, which will help with its management.While it is generally accepted that language and speech have genetic foundations, and that the widespread inter-individual variation observed in many of their aspects is partly driven by variation in genes, it is much less clear if differences between languages may also be partly rooted in our genes. We investigated whether the ITS2 nucleotide content and secondary structure was different between Ampelomyces ITS2 sequences and those unrelated to this genus as an important tool to analyse environmental sequencing and unveiling the underlying evolutionary processes.Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has long been known as a major cause of hospital-acquired (HA-MRSA) infections worldwide. For the past twenty years, an increasing number of studies have described its emergence in the community as well. In Portugal, a country with a high-prevalence of HA-MRSA, there are only limited data available on the epidemiology of MRSA in the community. We studied the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA colonization among healthy adults in Portugal. Between February 2015 and December 2016, a longitudinal study was conducted in which 87 adults aged 25-50 years old were followed for six months. For each participant nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal and saliva samples were obtained monthly and, in some cases, weekly. A total of 1,578 samples (n = 526 for each sampling site) were examined for the presence of S. aureus and MRSA by classical culture-based methods. Fifty-seven adults (65.5%) carried S. aureus at least once during the six months period of the study 19.5% were persistent S. aureus carriers and 46.0% were intermittent carriers. Carriage rates per sampling site were 20.5% in nasopharynx, 18.3% in oropharynx, and 13.5% in saliva. Simultaneous screening of the three sampling sites increased detection of S. aureus, which overall occurred in 34.4% of the 526 sampling time-points. No MRSA were isolated. In conclusion, this study adds novel information about the MRSA scenario in the Portuguese community. Our results indicate that, in Portugal, MRSA does not seem to circulate among healthy adults without risk factors and therefore this age group does not constitute, at the current time, a reservoir of MRSA in the community.In complex real-life motor skills such as unconstrained throwing, performance depends on how accurate is on average the outcome of noisy, high-dimensional, and redundant actions. Here we introduce a decomposition of performance into a small set of indicators that compactly and directly characterize the key performance-related features of the distribution of high-dimensional redundant actions.
