The present study was motivated by the behavioral immune theory, which suggests that disgust has evolved as a protective reaction to potential presence of disease agents in the immediate environment. We examined the relationships between the intensity of experienced physical disgust, perceived vulnerability to disease, and OCD symptoms. The intensity of experienced disgust was assessed with a recent procedure whereby participants rate how disgusted they feel in response to color versus black-and-white pictures that evoke physical disgust. In addition to this procedure, participants (N = 403) completed measures of perceived vulnerability to disease, OCD symptoms, depression and anxiety. OCD symptoms were positively related to the physical disgust evoked by the pictures, and this relationship was mediated by reported emotional discomfort in contexts that connote a potential for pathogen transmission. Replicating previous findings, color pictures were rated as more disgusting than black-and-white pictures overall, and this effect was especially pronounced among people with higher OCD tendencies. These results suggest that, consistent with behavioral immune theory, disgust in OCD is a basic, concrete emotion that is at least partly mediated by fear of pathogens.Potash abandoned mines cause severe environmental damage to their bordering environment, with significant impacts on freshwater ecosystems mostly through uncontrolled discharge of hypersaline effluents. This study aimed to evaluate the ecological impact caused by a hypersaline effluent from an abandoned potash mine (Menteroda, Germany) on freshwater biofilms and, specifically, on diatom communities. Biofilm from a pristine stream was exposed under controlled conditions in microcosms to a mining effluent (ME), and its structural (algal biomass, community composition, diatom metrics) and functional (photosynthetic activity, nutrient uptake) responses were evaluated over time and compared with unexposed biofilms used as control. Biofilm exposed to ME showed drastic functional responses after one day of exposure, with a significant decrease in photosynthetic efficiency and nutrient uptake, that were recovered over time. Biofilm exposed to ME showed a progressive increase in diatom metrics (abundance, density and growth rate) over time, compared to the control. However, a significant decrease in diatom species diversity, richness and cell size was also observed in biofilm exposed to ME. This study revealed that the ME affected the biofilm causing short-term functional responses, which were recovered simultaneously with a drastic diatom community structure shift.Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and given the large number of published hazard and exposure studies, quantitative environmental risks assessments of microplastics become feasible. We present here the first environmental risk assessment for marine waters based only on measured concentrations. The Thevariability and uncertainty of the measured data was accounted for in the exposure assessment, while probabilistic species sensitivity distributions were used for hazard assessment, from which a probability distribution was extracted for the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC). By dividing the exposure distribution by the PNEC-distribution, we were able to calculate probabilistic risk characterisation ratios for each water body in which measurements were performed. Results show a good coverage of the world's major water bodies by measured exposure concentrations (MECs), while the hazard assessment could be improved by aligning the type of particles tested in hazard studies (size, form, polymer) to those actually found in the oceans. Overall, the mean predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) is 3.84·106 part m-3, with Oryzias melastigma being the most sensitive species (calculated mean NOEC of 3.90·106 part m-3). Interestingly, the only type of dose descriptor that could be extracted from the literature for particles above 10-20 μm was the highest observed no effect concentration (HONEC), which indicates a very low or null toxicity of these larger MPs towards marine organisms. Triclosan, at environmental relevant concentrations (27 and 37 μg L-1), caused a decrease of proliferative capacity, which was accompanied by an increase of cell size and a profound alteration of algae shape. It was found that triclosan promoted the intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen species, the depletion of non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses (reduced glutathione and carotenoids) and a decrease of cell metabolic activity. A reduction of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and b) was also observed. For the highest concentration tested (37 μg L-1), a decrease of photosynthetic efficiency was detected along with a diminution of the relative transport rate of electrons on the photosynthetic chain.
