Induction of chirality from an achiral assembly system remains a huge challenge related to the origin of life. Here, induction of chirality in a metal-organic framework (MOF) built from achiral precursors has been realized. Assembling achiral H3 BTB ligands and ZnII /CdII clusters leads to a 2D coordination polymer (FJI-H16), while introduction of achiral pyridine into such assembly system leads to a 3D chiral MOF (FJI-H27 (M) or (P)). The driven force for chiral generation has been proved to be a pyridine participated kinetic-control assembly process, which can be controlled by changing the amount of pyridine and temperature, from no induction to partial induction to complete induction. The chiral generation process has been identified in detail through a pyridine-involved key intermediate (FJI-H28). OSMI-4 The targeted modification of pyridine can selectively lead to FJI-H27 (M) or FJI-H27 (P), making the chiral orientation and distribution of bulk FJI-H27 samples can be controlled. Our work not only represents a new chiral induction process that may relate to the chiral origin in nature, but also firstly reveals how achiral external stimuli generate chirality from achiral precursors, and offers a guide for rational preparation of chiral MOFs.A wide variety of biomass, from triglycerides to lignocellulosic-based feedstock, are among promising candidates to possibly fulfill requirements as a substitute for crude oils as primary sources of chemical energy feedstock. During the feedstock processing carried out to increase the HC ratio of the products, heteroatom-containing compounds can promote corrosion, thus limiting and/or deactivating catalytic processes needed to transform the biomass into fuel. The use of advanced gas chromatography techniques, in particular multi-dimensional gas chromatography, both heart-cutting and comprehensive coupled to mass spectrometry, has been widely exploited in the field of petroleomics over the past 30 years and has also been successfully applied to the characterization of volatile and semi-volatile compounds during the processing of biomass feedstock. This review intends to describe advanced gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based techniques, mainly focusing in the period 2011-early 2020. Particular emphasis has been devoted to the multi-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques, for the isolation and characterization of the oxygen-containing compounds in biomass feedstock. Within this context, the most recent advances to sample preparation, derivatization, as well as gas chromatography instrumentation, mass spectrometry ionization, identification, and data handling in the biomass industry, are described.Recent studies have shown that aberrant expression of tight junction proteins (TJP) contributes to malignant potential of various cancers. In the present study, we investigated the expression of junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A), one of the transmembrane TJP, in uterine cervical adenocarcinoma and the significance of its expression for malignancy. Immunohistochemistry on human surgical specimens showed that JAM-A was aberrantly expressed in neoplastic regions including adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS). Knockout of JAM-A significantly suppressed cell proliferation and colony-forming and migration abilities. We also showed that an antibody specific to an extracellular region of JAM-A reduced cell proliferation ability and that loss of JAM-A increased drug sensitivity of cervical adenocarcinoma cells. Based on a comprehensive proteome analysis, we found that poliovirus receptor (PVR/CD155) was regulated by JAM-A and formed a physical interaction with JAM-A. In human surgical specimens, PVR/CD155 expression was significantly correlated with some clinicopathological features and prognosis of cervical adenocarcinoma. Interestingly, most of the PVR/CD155-positive cases expressed a high level of JAM-A, and patients with the expression pattern of PVR/CD155 positive/JAM-A high had significantly shorter periods of relapse-free survival (P = .00964) and overall survival (P = .0204) than those for the other patients. Our observations suggest that aberrant expression of JAM-A promotes malignancy of uterine cervical adenocarcinoma by regulation of PVR/CD155, and JAM-A is therefore a potential therapeutic target for this malignancy.While many single-cell approaches have been developed to measure secretions from anchorage-independent cells, these protocols cannot be applied to adherent cells, especially when these cells require to be cultured in 3D formats. Here, a platform to measure secretions from individual spheroids of human mesenchymal stem cells, cultured within microfluidic droplets is introduced. The platform allows to quantify the secretions from hundreds of individual spheroids in each device, by using a secondary droplet to bring functionalized micro-beads in proximity to each spheroid. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) is measured on and a broad distribution of secretion levels within the population of spheroids is observed. The intra-cellular level of VEGF-A on each spheroid, measured through immuno-staining, correlates well with the extra-cellular measurement, indicating that the heterogeneities observed at the spheroid level result from variations at the intra-cellular level. Further, the molecular accumulation within the droplets is modeled and it is found that physical confinement is crucial for measurements of protein secretions. The model predicts that the time to achieve a measurement scales with droplet volume. These first measurements of secretions from individual spheroids provide several new biological and technological insights.
Respiratory viruses are a huge disease burden globally. An understanding of the seasonal trends and the ability to predict peak periods of respiratory virus disease incidence is useful for clinical care.

This is a retrospective analysis of paediatric hospitalizations of laboratory-confirmed viral respiratory tract infections in KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore, from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2016. Standard direct immunofluorescence was used to detect respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza A and B viruses, parainfluenza 1, 2 and 3 viruses, metapneumovirus and adenovirus.

A total of 97 840 specimens were analysed with a positive detection rate of 23.8%. RSV made up the largest proportion (42% of the total positive results), predominating between May to September. Influenza A had two peaks, June to July and December to January. Type 3 was the most common parainfluenza virus and showed annually recurring peaks. In contrast, parainfluenza 1 and 2, metapneumovirus and adenovirus had a biennial pattern.
