The longstanding dogma that the healthy lung is sterile has been refuted by recent advances in culture-independent analyses of airway samples. The respiratory microbiome comprises all airway and lung tissue-associated microbes. These micro-organisms occur throughout the upper and lower respiratory tracts, with different populations and distinct burdens at specific sites and can be classified as pathogenic or commensal.
The majority of studies investigating the respiratory microbiome have focused on bacteria; however, emerging evidence has revealed the composition of the lung virome, the global viral communities present in the lung tissue. In this review, we searched PubMed and used keywords such as airway microbiome. We restricted outputs to English language and did not limit by any dates. We summarize the up-to-date knowledge on how the microbiome interacts with the host immune system and influences the pathogenesis of pulmonary viral infections.
The relationship between colonizing microbes and the host is complex and various factors need to be considered in order to appreciate its pathophysiological consequences. Understanding these intricate mechanisms of interaction among the respiratory microbiome, viruses and the immune response may lead to the development of better therapies to treat or prevent respiratory viral infections.

Improving RV vaccination coverage may result in better RV disease control. To make RV vaccination accessible to all eligible children worldwide and improve vaccine effectiveness in high-mortality settings, research into new RV vaccines continues. Although current and in-development RV vaccines differ in vaccine design, their common goal is the reduction of RV disease risk in children less then 5 years old for whom disease burden is the most significant. Given the range of RV vaccines available, informed decision-making is essential regarding the choice of vaccine for immunization. This review aims to describe the landscape of current and new RV vaccines, providing context for the assessment of their similarities and differences. As data for new vaccines are limited, future investigations will be required to evaluate their performance/added value in a real-world setting.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem and it is associated with a high risk of mortality. Overweight and obesity are known as independent risk factors for CKD.
To investigate the association between adiposity indexes and kidney disease.
This study included 14,636 adults from ELSA-Brazil. Outcome variables altered glomerular filtration rate (GFR), categorized as yes (GFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m
) and no (GFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m
), albuminuria, estimated by albumin-creatinine ratio and categorized as yes (≥30 mg/g) and no (<30 mg/g), and presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) (altered GFR and/or albuminuria). Bafilomycin A1 purchase Exposure variables obesity and overweight (body mass index (BMI)≥30 and ≥25 kg/m
, respectively), high waist circumference (WC) (≥102 cm in men and ≥88 cm in women), high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) (≥0.90 in men and ≥0.85 in women), and high waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (≥0.5). To estimate the association between main exposures and outcomes, logistic regression analyses were performed using models adjusted for sociodemographic variables (age, gender, race/skin color, education), behavioral (smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption), components of the metabolic syndrome (HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, hypertension, diabetes
) and history of cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, angina or heart failure).
Individuals with obesity, high WC, WHR and WHtR were more prone to albuminuria when compared to individuals with normal values for these measures. It was also observed that these altered measures were positively associated with the presence of CKD.
Adiposity indexes have a direct and significant association with albuminuria and CKD.

The Southern States, including Mississippi, are experiencing a high incidence of COVID-19. Aims The objective of this study is to model the impact of face masks and hybrid learning on the COVID-19 epidemic on Mississippi State University (MSU) campus. Methods We used an age structured deterministic mathematical model of COVID-19 transmission within the MSU campus population, accounting for asymptomatic transmission. We modeled facemasks for the campus population at varying proportions of mask use and effectiveness, and Hyflex model of partial online learning with reduction of people on campus. Results Facemasks can substantially reduce cases and deaths, even with modest effectiveness. Even 20% uptake of masks will halve the epidemic size. Facemasks combined with Hyflex reduces epidemic size even more. Conclusions Universal use of face masks and reducing the number of people on campus may allow safer universities reopening. The major aim of this randomized, placebo-controlled, triple-blind clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of cinnamon as an adjuvant treatment in reducing glycemic levels in people with type 2 diabetes, compared to a placebo. The study was conducted between August and December 2019, with 160 people with type 2 diabetes, in five Primary Health Units, in Parnaíba, Brazil. Inclusion criteria were persons of both genders using oral antidiabetic agents, with glycated hemoglobin ≥ 6.0%, and between 18 and 80 years of age. The primary outcome was change in glycated hemoglobin levels after 90 days of intervention. Other biomarkers evaluated were fasting blood glucose, insulin level, and HOMA-IR index. Participants were divided equally into two groups of 80 individuals each, and were given 3 g capsules of either cinnamon or placebo to be taken in combination with their usual oral antidiabetic agents. After 90 days, participants in the cinnamon group had statistically significant reductions of 0.2% of glycated hemoglobin and 0.
