Visual working memory has been defined as a system of limited capacity that enables the maintenance and manipulation of visual information. However, some perceptual features like Gestalt grouping could improve visual working memory effectiveness. In two different experiments, we aimed to explore how the presence of elements grouped by color similarity affects the change detection performance of both, grouped and non-grouped items. We combined a change detection task with a retrocue paradigm in which a six item array had to be remembered. An always valid, variable-delay retrocue appeared in some trials during the retention interval, either after 100 ms (iconic-trace period) or 1400 ms (working memory period), signaling the location of the probe. The results indicated that similarity grouping biased the information entered into the visual working memory, improving change detection accuracy only for previously grouped probes, but hindering change detection for non-grouped probes in certain conditions (Exp. 1). However, this bottom-up automatic encoding bias was overridden when participants were explicitly instructed to ignore grouped items as they were irrelevant for the task (Exp. 2).
The question of whether refractive or topographic changes are to be expected after eye muscle surgery is largely unanswered.
Results of pre- and postoperative objective refraction, Pentacam (Oculus, Menlo Park, CA, USA), and visual acuity tests of 229eyes are included in the present analysis. The examinations took place preoperatively, on the first postoperative day, and after 3months.
After surgery on one or two extraocular recti muscle, there are significant changes in the cylinder (p < 0.001) on the first postoperative day, although values returned to normal after 3months. Similar changes also appeared in combined operations of extraocular and oblique muscles.
The authors postulate that extensive patient education with regard to temporary changes in the cylinder is necessary, particularly when the extraocular muscles are involved, and that additional refraction and topography control can be useful postoperatively if visual rehabilitation is inadequate.

Various strategies have already been developed to inhibit progression of myopia. The novel single vision lens presented in this article features the defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS) technology and adds an easy to use, noninvasive option to the portfolio of myopia treatment. Initial studies showed promising results with only a very low side effect profile.
Three groups of iris prostheses can be distinguished for the surgical treatment of iris defects (1)segmental iris implants, (2)combined iris diaphragm intraocular lenses (IOL) and (3)pure iris implants. Most iris reconstructions are accompanied by aphakia correction with secondary IOL implantation. Although the primary goal is to create apupil and to improve glare perception, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity, the esthetic result is also arelevant component.
Functional and esthetic results after replacement of an aniridia IOL implant with acustom-made artificial iris with IOL.
In this retrospective study with seven eyes from seven patients, an iris diaphragm IOL (Morcher GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany) was exchanged for medical reasons (subluxation) against acustom-made artificial iris made of silicone (ArtificialIris, HumanOptics, Erlangen, Germany) in combination with asutured IOL. The follow-up period was at least 3 months. Best corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell count (ECC), coional result but simultaneously also an esthetically pleasing result.
Compared to a rigid aniridia IOL implant, replacement with a custom-made artificial iris in combination with an IOL provides not only a good functional result but simultaneously also an esthetically pleasing result.
Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the gallbladder are very rare. As a result, the classification of pathologic specimens from gallbladder NENs, currently classified as gallbladder neuroendocrine tumors (GB-NETs) and carcinomas (GB-NECs), is inconsistent and makes nomenclature, classification, and management difficult. Our study aims to evaluate the epidemiological trend, tumor biology, and outcomes of GB-NET and GB-NEC over the last 5 decades.
This is a retrospective analysis of the SEER database from 1973 to 2016. The epidemiological trend was analyzed using the age-adjusted Joinpoint regression analysis. Survival was assessed with Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression was used to assess predictors of poor survival.
A total of 482 patients with GB-NEN were identified. Mean age at diagnosis was 65.2 ± 14.3years. Females outnumbered males (65.6% vs. 34.4%). Caspase inhibitor The Joinpoint nationwide trend analysis showed a 7% increase per year from 1973 to 2016. The mean survival time after diagnosis of GB-NEN was 37. rising incidence in the USA. In addition to tumor staging, surgical resection significantly impacts patient survival, when patients are able to undergo surgery irrespective of tumor staging. Advanced age, tumor extension, and histopathological grade of the tumor were associated with higher mortality.Bile acids and their signaling pathways are increasingly recognized as potential therapeutic targets for cholestatic and metabolic liver diseases. This review summarizes new insights in bile acid physiology, focusing on regulatory roles of bile acids in the control of immune regulation and on effects of pharmacological modulators of bile acid signaling pathways in human liver disease. Recent mouse studies have highlighted the importance of the interactions between bile acids and gut microbiome. Interfering with microbiome composition may be beneficial for cholestatic and metabolic liver diseases by modulating formation of secondary bile acids, as different bile acid species have different signaling functions. Bile acid receptors such as FXR, VDR, and TGR5 are expressed in a variety of cells involved in innate as well as adaptive immunity, and specific microbial bile acid metabolites positively modulate immune responses of the host. Identification of Cyp2c70 as the enzyme responsible for the generation of hydrophilic mouse/rat-specific muricholic acids has allowed the generation of murine models with a human-like bile acid composition.
