Driving License Category A1
Driving License Category A1 allows you to drive motorized two-wheeled vehicles. It permits you to drive mopeds or small motorcycles that have engine power that is not more than 11 kW.
The procedure for obtaining this license is slightly different from other categories. Let's look at the steps.
Prerequisites
You need to be at least 16 years old to get a driving license category A1. This license permits you to drive light motorcycles, while categories A2 and A are designed for larger motor vehicles. You also must complete an initial aid course and complete a theoretical education that is based on the complete program. Various driving schools offer this course. All driving schools follow the same curriculum, even if their prices might differ.
The practical training comprises a number of driving lessons. These classes are between three and four hours per. The instructors will teach you the fundamentals of your motorcycle and the basic rules of the road. The amount of training hours will depend on your skill and progress in learning, however the syllabus calls for a minimum of 5 training hours on federal roads and four hours of instruction on country roads. You must also attend various special riding lessons that are designed to enhance your ability to handle difficult situations.
Anyone who plans to drive vehicles in category C must hold a driving license that is a category B or higher. Someone who already holds a category B licence can continue to learn of category A1 by following an abbreviated course, but must complete the minimum requirement of ten theory and ten driving lessons at driving schools. This is not possible for people who holds an A category licence, and that is why the instruction for this category starts at a younger age.
Driving License Category A1 is a great option for teenagers looking to get behind the wheel of their own vehicle, or for those who have been driving for a long time, but are seeking a new way to commute. The restrictions of this type of license are designed to ensure everyone's safety. However, they can be removed if you prove that you are able to safely operate larger vehicles.
You must have a valid medical certificate in addition to your driver's license. Depending on your medical condition, you may be required to pass an eye examination or other tests. You can upgrade your license by adding an endorsement. This usually involves passing a knowledge test and sometimes, a skill test.
Training
To obtain a Driving License Category A1, you must pass both the theory and practical test. You also need to take part in theory classes and receive training. The course will teach the fundamentals of motorcycling including traffic laws and regulations. You will be able to use this knowledge in future driving. In the course, you will learn about the common tests and materials, as well as the additive that contains special requirements for each licence category.
After passing the theory and the practical test, you are able to drive a car up to 125cc. This includes tricycles, motorcycles, and mopeds that have three or four wheels. The vehicle must not weigh more than 400kg unladen or be capable of carrying loads of up to 750kg. You must also be 16 years old in order to be able to obtain a license in this category.
It is possible to upgrade from Category A1 to a full category driver's license at the age of 20 if you have held a subcategory A2 for two years. This allows you to drive vehicles with the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 750kg, as well in subcategory A and A1 motorbikes. To tow trailers that have an authorized maximum mass (MAM) greater than 750kg, you must also hold a Category E licence.
It is important to note that you must have the permission of your guardian in order to apply for an Driving License category A1. In Belgium, a full category-A license is required to operate a three-wheeled motorcycle or moped. You can drive a category A1 motorbike if you possess a full category A or full A2 licence. In other countries, it's possible to gain easier access to a higher licence category by first gaining experience driving less powerful motorcycles. For instance, in Germany after two years of experience in Category A1 - motorcycles with up to 11kW - you only need to pass a practice test and not a test of theory when upgrading to category A2. Similar to Austria, after five years of instruction (with the total time of 9x1.5 hours), it is possible to pass the exam for the full A license.
Theory test
The Driving License Category A1 test is a two part test, that includes the theoretical and practical portions. It is designed to give you a basic understanding of the highway code and driving skills. You must pass both tests to obtain your licence. You can take your exams at any time prior to or following the completion of the mandatory basic training (CBT).
The test for theory comprises 50 multiple-choice options that you must correctly answer. It is recommended that you study well for the test before taking it and to attend the theory class at an accredited driving academy or at a motorcycle training centre. You can also practice the questions on the internet.
Once you have passed the exam in the theory section, you can arrange a test in the practical. You must bring your valid driver's licence and evidence of identity to the test centre, together with the vehicle you will use to take the test. You must wear a helmet and all necessary safety gear.
After you have passed the practical part of the test, you will receive your driver's license within two weeks. It will be engraved with a gold band over the expiration date, and you will be required to show it every time you are asked to show it. You cannot drive any other vehicle on your licence and you'll need to renew it every two years.
If you've had experience riding a motorcycle, you may be exempt from the practical or theory test depending on your age. You can find out more about the requirements for this by going to the official website of the Traffic Commissioner. The website also provides information on the different categories of driving licences as well as other laws that are relevant. The website is available in both Dutch and English.
Practical test
The practical test portion of the Driving License Category A1 exam comprises two parts. The first part is the examiner checking and prepping your motorcycle to drive. Then, you'll be required to complete several practical tasks on a test course. You will be required to do an angle start, which involves moving away from behind a vehicle that is parked. You'll also be asked to make several hill starts, and turning left and right on the road. The examiner may also ask you to follow a certain route and drive the road ahead, unless directed otherwise on the radio.
You must answer 50 multiple-choice questions to be able to get your license. You can take the test at a training centre or independently. You can prepare for the test by completing a theory course at a driving school or ongoing training center. Drivers Cam allows you to keep track of your progress and pick the best training for you.
You must have completed a minimum of 5 hours of training on Federal or country roads, four hours of training on highways and 3 training hours in the dark or at dawn before you are able to take the practical test. These hours are added to the regular training you need to complete while taking motorcycle lessons.
After having passed the theory and practice tests, you'll be granted a Driving License Category A1. This license permits you to operate a motorcycle with a maximum displacement of 125 cc and a power/weight ratio not more than 11 kW per kg. You are also able to drive tricycles with three wheels (trike) with this licence if it has a capacity for the engine of up to 125 cubic centimeters and a weight/power ratio of not more than 15 kW per kilogram.
In addition to the driving test, you must also pass a medical examination before you can obtain your license. You must show proof that you have taken a first-aid course and pass an eyesight test. If praktyka na motocyklu under the age of 18 years old, you must get the permission of your legal guardian or parent to apply for a driving license.
