ented, and mixed reality tools offers a great opportunity to put our field at the forefront of a paradigm shift in surgical education. The critical utility of digital education could not be further emphasized any more than in the unfortunate and infrequent situation of a worldwide pandemic. This article reviews some of the important recent technologies that have developed and their applications in plastic surgery education and offers a look into what we can expect in the future.
Fat graft ischemia impedes us from having satisfying long-term results. The quality and quantity culture is a 1-week cell culture that increases the vasculogenic potential of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC). This in vivo murine model investigates whether enrichment with quality and quantity-cultured human mononuclear cells (MNC-QQ) improves the vascularization in the human fat graft and whether this decreases the tissue loss.

Human adipose tissue, PBMNC, MNC-QQ, and stromal vascular fraction were prepared. First, PBMNC, MNC-QQ, and stromal vascular fraction were compared in vitro for vasculogenic potential by endothelial progenitor cell colony-forming and culture assays. Second, 0.25-g fat grafts were created with 1 × 106 PBMNC (n = 16), 1 × 106 MNC-QQ (n = 16), 1 × 106 stromal vascular fraction (n = 16), or phosphate-buffered saline as control (n = 16) before grafting in BALB/c nude mice. Grafts were analyzed for weight persistence, vessel formation by CD31 immunohistochemistry, and angiogenicance graft survival in a rodent recipient.
The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of bimaxillary orthognathic surgery regarding different sequencing (maxilla-first or mandible-first surgery) and different thicknesses of intermediate splints.

This retrospective cohort study evaluated the accuracy of postoperative outcome in accordance with virtual planning in 57 patients requiring bimaxillary osteotomies with different operation sequence maxilla-first (n = 31) or mandible-first (n = 26) surgery. The effect of different splint thicknesses (i.e., thick, n = 22; and thin, n = 35) was also evaluated. The 1-week postoperative cone-beam computed tomographic craniofacial images were superimposed onto preoperative simulated images to measure the discrepancy of the three-dimensional cephalometric landmarks.

Neither sequencing approach differed in overall accuracy (1-week postoperative to preoperative simulated image discrepancy) maxilla-first, 1.69 ± 0.53 mm; versus mandible-first, 1.44 ± 0.52 mm. In detailed comparison, mandible-first surgery resulted in more accuracy in the vertical dimension. Thick intermediate splints provided better control (less error) of upper central incisors in the sagittal position (thick splint, 1.38 ± 1.17 mm; thin splint, 2.13 ± 1.38 mm). However, overall accuracy was not affected by splint thickness. Conditions affecting sequencing predilection included skeletal class III with vertical excess, maxillary down-grafting, counterclockwise rotation of the maxillomandibular complex, and simulated mandibular opening for splint fabrication clearance.

Despite both means of sequencing being performed similarly, mandible-first surgery was more precise in the vertical dimension. Thick intermediate splints seemed to yield better control of central incisors in the sagittal position. However, under appropriate selection of intermediate splints to maintain interim condylar position, splint thickness has no effect on overall accuracy.

Current common techniques for repairing calvarial defects by autologous bone grafting and alloplastic implants have significant limitations. In this study, the authors investigated a novel alternative approach to bone repair based on peptide amphiphile nanofiber gels that are engineered to control the release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to recruit circulating stem cells to a site of bone regeneration and facilitate bone healing by bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2).

VEGF release kinetics from peptide amphiphile gels were evaluated. Chemotactic functional scaffolds were fabricated by combining collagen sponges with peptide amphiphile gels containing VEGF. The in vitro and in vivo chemotactic activities of the scaffolds were evaluated by measuring mesenchymal stem cell migration, and angiogenic capability of the scaffolds was also evaluated. Large-scale rodent cranial bone defects were created to evaluate bone regeneration after implanting the scaffolds and other control materials.

VEGFor circulating mesenchymal stem cells because of controlled release of VEGF from the peptide amphiphile gels. The chemotactic functional scaffolds may play a role in the future design of clinically relevant bone graft substitutes for large-scale bone defects.
Timing of frontofacial surgery for the syndromic craniosynostosis as it relates to various surgical risks has not been adequately studied. The purpose of this study was to investigate posterior dental complications of midface advancement in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis undergoing surgery at different ages and the effects on subsequent orthognathic surgery.

A retrospective chart review of patients with syndromic craniosynostosis treated with midface advancement (monobloc or Le Fort III) from 1999 to 2018 was carried out. Patient demographics, records, and imaging studies were reviewed. A subanalysis of those patients who were also treated with orthognathic surgery from 2014 to 2018 with imaging studies available for analysis was also performed.

Thirty-seven patients met the inclusion criteria. Sixty-four percent of the patients had radiographic evidence of maxillary molar dental abnormality. Older age at the time of surgery was significantly associated with a lower odds of sustaining dental iandate earlier intervention.
Pathologic scarring including keloid and hypertrophic scar causes aesthetic and physical problems, and there are clinical difficulties (e.g., posttreatment recurrence) in dealing with pathologic scarring. Understanding the mechanisms that underlie scar control in wound healing will help prevent and treat pathologic scarring. The authors focused on CD206+ macrophages in the wound-healing process, and hypothesized that CD206+ macrophages have antifibrotic effects on fibroblasts.

The authors established a co-culture system for CD206+ macrophages and fibroblasts (cell ratio, 11). The authors examined the CD206+ macrophages' antifibrotic effects on fibroblasts after a 72-hour culture, focusing on fibrosis-related genes. PF 429242 purchase To identify key factor(s) in the interaction between CD206+ macrophages and fibroblasts, the authors analyzed cytokines in a conditioned medium of the co-culture system.

Under co-culture with CD206+ macrophages, expression of the following in the fibroblasts was significantly down-regulated type 1 (fold change, 0.
