Consequently, there is urgent need to reduce the impact of environmental pollution from it. Coagulation techniques have been recommended and used by many researchers successfully in treating wastewater, therefore an investigation of possible use of chito-protein extracted from crab shell (locally sourced) was used as a coagulant for treating abattoir wastewater. Coagulation experiments were carried out using jar-test procedure to investigate the influence of pH, time of settling, temperature and adsorbent dosage for coagulation of BOD, COD, Turbidity and Colour from the wastewater sample. To determine the interaction effect of the various process variables, Response Surface Method (RSM) was used in the optimization of the process variables. To determine the effectiveness of the coagulant, pre and post characterization of the wastewater samples were undertaken, the result of the post characterization of the wastewater sample indicated that most of the water quality parameters except Iron were within WHO standard. The Total Suspended Solid (TSS), for instance stood at 564.6 mg/L and 29 mg/L respectively for pre and post characterisation, the value of 29 mg/L of the post characterization was below the WHO recommended value of 30 mg/L. The predicted responses and the experimental values correlated significantly, an indicator that RSM optimization method used in this study is suitable in modelling the process variables. The result of the study further shows that optimum process variable is dependent on the solution pH (acidic), coagulant dosage of 2-3g, settling time of 25-30 min and operating temperature from 323K to 333K. The coagulant used in this study, when compared with previous studies have shown to have strong potential for use as a coagulant and as an alternative to chemical coagulants in the treatment of abattoir wastewater.
The interpolated twitch technique (ITT) is a ubiquitous test for assessing the level of voluntary muscle force generation, in which muscle twitches are evoked via percutaneous electrical stimulation. Traditionally, the stimulation timing during the ITT is not computer-controlled and usually delivered from 5 to 10 s after the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the potentiated muscle.

In this work, we evaluated the sizes of the evoked twitches in the lower limb with different controlled stimulation time delays with respect to the MVC of the ankle plantar flexors. Fifteen healthy participants were included. We recorded the un-potentiated muscle twitch amplitudes at rest in response to doublet supramaximal stimulation of the tibial nerve, superimposed twitches (SITs) at three different delays from the beginning of the MVC force plateau (0.1, 0.75, and 1.5 s), and resting twitches in the potentiated muscle at four different delays once the MVC was finished (0.1, 2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 s).

So in this regard, designing real-time VOC responsive materials is gaining attention across the scientific community. In this present work, we have developed an inexpensive VOC sensor based on a Meisenheimer complex derived from picric acid and N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. The sensor coated TLC plate was used as a sensor of potentially harmful VOCs. The sensor coated TLC plate looks deep red colored and does not show any fluorescence emission under 366 nm UV light. But in the presence of harmful volatile organic compounds like benzene, toluene, xylene, etc the sensor coated TLC plate becomes orange colored and it also shows strong yellow emission under 366 nm UV light. This property was utilized to detect the VOCs by fluorescence spectroscopy. The detection limit for various VOCs was found to be in the range of 0.7-9 ppm. To make the sensor user friendly, we have demonstrated a method where VOCs can be detected using a smartphone in real-time and also the setup is portable.
