Degradation of neonicotinoid insecticide dinotefuran (DIN) in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) non-thermal plasma combined with lanthanum-doped titanium dioxide (La-TiO2) system was investigated. A La-TiO2 catalyst was prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by SEM, XRD, and DRS. The effects of various factors (initial concentration, initial pH, input power, and addition of metal ions) on the removal rate of DIN were evaluated. The results indicated that when the initial concentration, input power, initial pH, and Fe2+ catalyst ions were 100 mg/L, 150 W, 10.5 and 50 mg/L, respectively, the DIN degradation efficiency was improved to 99.0% by coupling 10 wt% La-TiO2 at 180 min. La-TiO2 showed excellent catalytic performance on DIN degradation in a DBD system. The removal rate decreased with the presence of H2O2 and a scavenger, manifesting that H O ∙ plays an imperative role in the degradation process. Furthermore, intermediate products were analyzed by MS and the possible degradation pathway of DIN was proposed.Sodium bicarbonate (SB) is considered an effective ergogenic supplement for improving high-intensity exercise capacity and performance, although recent data suggests that women may be less amenable to its ergogenic effects than men. Currently, an apparent paucity of data on women means no consensus exists on whether women benefit from SB supplementation. The aim of the current study was to quantify the proportion of the published literature on SB supplementation that includes women, and to synthesise the evidence regarding its effects on blood bicarbonate and exercise performance in women by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Electronic searches of the literature were undertaken using three databases (MEDLINE, Embase, SPORTDiscus) to identify relevant articles. All meta-analyses were performed within a Bayesian framework. A total of 149 SB articles were identified, 11 of which contained individual group data for women. Results indicated a pooled blood bicarbonate increase of 7.4 [95%CrI 4.2-10. women.Despite the small amount of available data, results are consistent in showing that sodium bicarbonate supplementation in women leads to large changes in blood bicarbonate and that there is strong evidence for a positive ergogenic effect on exercise performance that is likely small to medium in magnitude.Based on these findings, we do not believe there is any evidence to support sex-specific sodium bicarbonate dosing recommendations and that current recommendations of 0.2-0.3 g·kg-1BM of SB taken 60-180 min prior to high-intensity exercise appear appropriate for the female athlete.To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of switching to a dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimen in a cohort of virological suppressed HIV-infected patients who have previously been treated with different antiretroviral combination. Ninety-six individuals who switched to a DTG-containing regimen were followed up for 48 weeks. HIV RNA, CD4+ T cell count, weight, and levels of laboratory parameters were recorded at baseline, after 24 and 48 weeks of treatment for all study participants. In a subgroup of patients, HIV DNA and inflammation/coagulation marker levels were also analyzed until week 24. Ninety-three out of 96 patients maintained virological suppression, including patients who switched to dual-therapy from triple-drug combination. Eighteen out of 96 patients had residual viremia at baseline, of which 13 reached the maximal viral suppression at W48. Serum creatinine levels showed a significant increase at weeks 24 and 48. A progressive reduction of total cholesterol was observed from week 24 and up to week 48. No variation in body mass index was detected. HIV DNA, inflammation, and coagulation marker levels did not significantly change during follow-up. Switching to a DTG-based regimen may be a key option for achieving and maintaining maximal virological suppression, even in patients showing residual viremia at baseline. Furthermore, the improvement in blood lipid profile and the overall tolerability observed in this study strongly support the use of these regimens in the aging HIV population.
Ketogenic diet therapies (KDTs) offer a needed therapeutic option for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. The current study investigated biochemical and anthropometric indices of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in adults with epilepsy treated with KDT over 6 months.
65 adults with epilepsy naïve to diet therapy were enrolled in a prospective longitudinal study and instructed on modified Atkins diet (MAD) use. Seizure frequency, anthropometric measures, blood levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoproteins A1 and B, and lipoprotein sub-fractions were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months.
Subsequent to study enrollment, 34 participants were lost to follow-up, elected not to start, or stopped MAD prior to study completion, leaving a total of 31 participants in the study at 6 months. Compared to baseline, participants on MAD showed significant reductions in median seizure frequency/week, weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference, and percent body fat at 3 and 6 months. Compared to baseline, participants on MAD for 3 months showed significantly increased levels of total, small and medium LDL particles, ApoB and ApoB/A1 ratio. At 6 months, only small LDL particles and ApoB levels remained elevated and levels of ApoA1 had risen, suggesting possible compensatory adaptation over time.
This study provides evidence demonstrating the efficacy and cardiovascular safety of 6 months of MAD use by adults with epilepsy. It also highlights an index of CVD risk - small LDL particles - that should be closely monitored..
