We assessed knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and practices toward COVID-19 and face-mask use among 644 high-risk individuals in Kampala, Uganda. In data analysis, descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses with a 95% CI were considered. Adjusted odds ratios were used to determine the magnitude of associations. P-values less then 0.05 were considered statistically significant. The majority, 99.7% and 87.3% of the participants, respectively, had heard about COVID-19 and believed that face-masks were protective against COVID-19, whereas 67.9% reported having received information on face-mask use. Food-market vendors and those with no formal education were 0.5 and 0.3 times less likely to have received information about face-mask use than hospital workers and those who had completed secondary school, respectively. Those who had received information on face-mask use were 2.9 and 1.8 times more likely to own face-masks and to perceive them as protective, respectively. Food-market vendors were 3.9 times more likely to reuse their face-masks than hospital workers. Our findings suggest that Ugandan high-risk groups have good knowledge, optimistic attitudes and perceptions, and relatively appropriate practices toward COVID-19.Reporting discrepancies between officially confirmed COVID-19 death counts and unreported COVID-19-like illness (CLI) death counts have been evident across the world, including Bangladesh. Publicly available data were used to explore the differences between confirmed COVID-19 death counts and deaths with possible COVID-19 symptoms between March 2, 2020 and August 22, 2020. Unreported CLI death counts totaled more than half of the confirmed COVID-19 death counts during the study period. However, the reporting authority did not consider CLI deaths, which might produce incomplete and unreliable COVID-19 data and respective mortality rates. All deaths with possible COVID-19 symptoms need to be included in provisional death counts to better estimate the COVID-19 mortality rate and to develop data-driven COVID-19 response strategies. An urgent initiative is needed to prepare a comprehensive guideline for reporting COVID-19 deaths.In a phase 4, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, multicenter study, to assess the safety and immunogenicity of live, attenuated cholera vaccine PXVX0200 in children aged 2-5 years in the United States, 172 volunteers were randomized 61 to receive a single dose of 1 × 109 CFU of PXVX0200 or placebo. Immunogenicity endpoints included serum vibriocidal antibody (SVA) levels on days 1, 11, and 29. Safety was assessed by comparing solicited signs and symptoms on days 1-8, unsolicited adverse events through day 29, and serious adverse events (SAEs) through day 181. The SVA seroconversion rates 10 days after immunization were 98.1% and 0% in vaccine and placebo recipients, respectively, and the vaccine seroconversion rate was non-inferior to the 93.5% rate seen in the bridging population of adults aged 18-45 years from a lot consistency study. Most reactogenicity was mild to moderate, and there were no study-related SAEs. PXVX0200 appears safe and immunogenic in children aged 2-5 years.We studied whether circulating secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) activity reliably distinguished patients with snakebite envenomation from those with nonvenomous/dry snakebites, and whether patients with progressive local swelling had persistence of circulating sPLA2 activity despite antivenom treatment. We prospectively enrolled adults presenting to the emergency with a history of snakebite in the past 24 hours. We estimated circulating sPLA2 activity at baseline before antivenom administration and after 48 hours in those with envenomation. We enrolled 52 patients with snakebites (mean age 39.3 ± 12.6 years; 35 [67%] men), and 16 patients with infective cellulitis as controls. Thirty patients had local ± systemic envenomation; 15 were classified as dry/nonvenomous bites; and envenomation status was unclear in seven patients. Baseline sPLA2 activity was significantly higher in snakebite patients than that in those with infective cellulitis (4.64 [3.38-5.91] versus 3.38 [1.69-4.01] nmol/minute/mL; P = 0.005). Among patients with snakebites, sPLA2 activity in the highest quartile was significantly associated with envenomation (12 of 27 versus two of 22; P = 0.010). However, median sPLA2 activity did not differ significantly between patients with envenomation and the rest. Baseline sPLA2 activity was significantly associated with the maximum extent of limb swelling (P = 0.031 for trend). In envenomed patients, circulating sPLA2 activity significantly decreased after 48 hours compared with the baseline (5.49 [3.38-8.86] versus 3.38 [2.53-4.64]; P = 0.003) including those with progressive swelling. Although circulating sPLA2 activity was elevated following snakebites, its sensitivity to diagnose envenomation appears to be limited. Administration of more antivenom after systemic manifestations had reversed might not benefit patients with progressive local swelling.Stool samples from 122 children living in an urban slum (n = 72) and rural (n = 50) areas were analyzed using multi-parallel real-time quantitative PCR to determine intestinal prevalence parasites from two communities in Colombia. Findings indicated a prevalence of 86.1% Blastocystis spp., 62.5% Giardia intestinalis, 19.4% Cryptosporidium spp., 19.4% Ascaris lumbricoides, and 5.6% Trichuris trichiura in an urban slum; and 76% Blastocystis spp., 68% G. intestinalis, 20% Entamoeba histolytica, 50% A. lumbricoides, 46% T. trichiura, and 2% Strongyloides stercoralis in rural areas. Polyparasitism was higher in rural (58%) than urban (25%) areas (P = 0.001). selleck chemical Trichuris trichiura burden was higher in the rural area (P = 0.002).
