Dementia is a common mental disorder that affects the life quality in elders. Recently, emerging studies reported the negative impacts of dementia on prognosis after hip surgeries. However, the integrated and reliable role of dementia in hip surgery is not illustrated.
We searched the relevant literatures before June 2020 and extracted the data that met the inclusion criteria. The influence of dementia on postoperative walking ability, complications including infection, cardiovascular complications, hip dislocation, delirium, and respiratory complications, and survival rate at different periods were evaluated. Qualitative and quantitative analysis were conducted using Review Manager Version 5.3.
The meta-analysis enrolled a total of 30 studies with 1,037,049 patients. QVDOph The pooled results revealed that there were significant negative impacts of dementia on the recovery of postoperative walking ability, postoperative infection, hip dislocation, delirium and respiratory complications and mortality at different periods.
Dementia is a crucial risk factor for the poor prognosis after hip fracture surgery. Therefore, when making clinical strategies for hip fracture patients with dementia, countermeasures for possible complications should be generated.

The aim of this study is to identify optimum target levels of hemoglobin (Hgb) in older males and females according to cognitive performance, mood state, nutrition intake, balance-walking functions, muscle strength and performance in daily life activities.
A total of 1942 geriatric patients who had undergone comprehensive geriatric assessment were evaluated. The patient's demographic characteristics, comorbid diseases, number of drugs, cognitive performance, mood and nutritional states, basic and instrumental daily living activity indexes were obtained from hospital files. Hgb levels were analyzed on the same day. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis was used to detect the optimum level of Hgb according to the best performance of geriatric assessment parameters.
1095 participants took part of who 71.9% were female and the mean age was 76.92 ± 7.38years (65-103years). There was a significant negative correlation between age, number of drugs used, Geriatric Depression Scale-15, Timed Up and Go test and Hgb in both sexes while a significant positive correlation was found between Barthel and Lawton activities of daily living, Tinetti test, Mini Nutritional Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination and Hgb (p < 0.05). The optimum Hgb levels were ≥ 13.0 for females and ≥ 13.9 in males.
Findings from the present study in relation to Hgb and key geriatric evaluation parameters suggests that the optimum level of Hgb for older females and males is higher than the level of Hgb in current definitions. Data from this study suggest that the optimum value of the Hgb level is 13.0 for females and 13.9 for males.

We have investigated the effects of polyol molecules (glycerol and sorbitol) on the optical and triplet excitation dynamics of light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2) from Rhodobacter (Rba.) sphaeroides in buffer-detergent solutions. The resonance Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that, on increasing glycerol and sorbitol volume fractions ranging from 0 to 80% (v/v) (accompanied by the decreasing water activities), the planar and all-trans conformation of carotenoids (Crts) remained unchanged, and the bacteriochlorophyll a (BChl) Qy absorption intensity decreased. The B850 fluorescence amplitude elevated in the 20-80% v/v sorbitol and 20-40% v/v glycerol solution, but decreased in 80% v/v glycerol solution. The change of 3[Crt*-BChl] interaction bands caused by 3Crt*-BChl interaction had no obvious correlation with water activities against polyol volume fractions, which are rationalized by the water activity sensitive of C- and N-termini of protein which binding with BChls. The results suggest that Rba. sphaeroides LH2 is more sensitive to low-molecular-weight polyols compared with that of the thermophiles purple bacterium Thermochromatium (Tch.) tepidum we had investigated before.
Psoriasis is associated with metabolic syndrome; however, the relationship of psoriasis severity with individual cardiometabolic risk factors is not clear. There is a reporting gap between the cardiometabolic risks among patients with psoriasis and what has been reported in the literature using US samples.
The objective of this study was to examine the disease burden of psoriasis and assess the associations of psoriasis severity and cardiometabolic risk factors in a nationally representative sample.
We conducted a cross-sectional study using the weighted pooled data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) 2007 through 2016. The NAMCS data were collected from US office-based physicians. Each physician was randomly assigned a specific week to report a sample of their cases. Patients were categorized as severe psoriasis if they were prescribed at least one systemic therapy. We used logistic regression models adjusting for potential confounders to estimate the associations of psoriasis seveed health issues in psoriasis, and obesity is associated with greater psoriasis severity.Depression is a common and highly disabling condition in older adults. It is a heterogenous disorder and there is emerging evidence of a link between inflammation and depression in older patients, with a possible inflammatory subtype of depression. Persistent low-level inflammation, from several sources including psychological distress and chronic disease, can disrupt monoaminergic and glutaminergic systems to create dysfunctional brain networks. Despite the evidence for the role of inflammation in depression, there is insufficient evidence to recommend use of any putative anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of depression in older adults at this stage. Further characterisation of markers of inflammation and stratification of participants with elevated rates of inflammatory markers in treatment trials is needed.
