Age-related mounting results: Exactly why vaccine versus COVID-19 must be marketed in another way inside more youthful along with older adults.
Introduction The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a global health emergency. Major disruption to healthcare services during the current COVID-19 pandemic will last even after its peak. Sexual and reproductive health (SRH), specially contraception, needs to be understood as an essential service. Areas covered This paper is a narrative review. Data from PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and websites of scientific societies were screened during the months of April and May 2020. It addresses the main aspects related to contraception during the COVID-19 pandemic, with special emphasis on family planning services, extended use of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods, drug interactions, and thromboembolism risk. We also specified some issues focused on the Brazilian reality. Expert opinion Ensuring proper contraception use in the COVID-19 time is very important. We encourage women, healthcare providers, policymakers, and the society to consider SRH services as priority. Most of the mesoporous chiral mesoporous silica (CMS) was synthesized by the chiral surfactant-directing method. In this study, a facile method was designed to synthesize CMS. In this method, achiral amphiphile was used as templating agents, and dilute ammonia solution was applied to induce the chirality of the CMS. Meanwhile, its morphology can be controlled by changing the concentration of the aqueous ammonia solution. The obtained CMS was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that all of the CMS possessed highly ordered mesostructures, and as the concentration of ammonia decreases, the chirality of the CMS becomes more obvious. Water-insoluble drug curcumin (Cur) was used as a model drug. The characteristics of CMS before and after drug loading were further detected by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), N2 adsorption-desorption and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The result showed that Cur was successfully loaded inside the pores of the CMS and remained an amorphous state due to steric inhibition. Additionally, CMS could significantly increase the release rate of Cur under different pH conditions. The present study evaluated the protective effect of fluted pumpkin seeds (FPS) on atrazine (ATZ)-induced testicular damage. Twenty adult male Wistar rats were divided into four groups of five animals each. The control animals (Group A) received corn oil (2 mL/kg body weight), Group B animals received 50 mg ATZ/kg body weight by gavage, while Groups C and D received 50 mg ATZ/kg body weight once a week in addition to the gavage of 25 mg FPS/kg body weight and 50 mg FPS/kg body weight respectively for 60 days. The results showed that testicular myeloperoxidase activity and nitrite concentration were decreased in all groups compared to the control value. The increase in malondialdehyde and decrease in glutathione concentrations in group B were abrogated in group C (p less then 0.05) but not in group D animals. The increase in γ-glutamyl transpeptidase and decrease in lactate dehydrogenase enzyme activities in the group B animals were also normalized to control values in group C but not in group D animals. Interestingly, the testis of the group D animals showed massive depletion of germ cells and the diameter of the seminiferous tubules of these animals were decreased compared to all other groups. However, the number of motile sperms, abnormal sperms and sperm count in Group D animals were similar to the ATZ-treated animals and lower than control values. In conclusion, FPS protected against ATZ-induced testicular damage but can also harm the testis at a higher dose. Objectives Body weight is one of the factors affecting blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD). The aim of this study was to establish whether a vitamin D (vitD) weight-based dosing is more appropriate to a fixed daily dose in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Materials/methods This was an open label randomised trial. Patients with IBD were assigned to receive oral cholecalciferol at a dose of 28 IU/kg (IU/kg) or 2000 IU per day (IU/day) for 12 weeks during winter months. 25OHD plasma levels and other biochemical parameters were measured at baseline and after supplementation period. The primary outcome measure was 25OHD level after a follow-up period. Results A total of 173 patients were analysed. The mean BMI was 25.5 ± 5.1 and initial mean 25OHD level was 62.7 ± 25.5 nmol/l. A similar increase (9.7 ± 26.9 vs 9.8 ± 26.7 nmol/l) in 25OHD levels occurred both in IU/kg and IU/day group. The proportion of subjects with normal and sub-normal levels following the substitution was comparable irrespective of body weight. The change in 25OHD level correlated positively only with the dose of vitD (p less then .001) and negatively with the baseline 25OHD level (p less then .001). A sustained 25OHD level of 75 nmol/l corresponds with a calculated daily vitD dose of 2034 IU.Conclusions Weight-based dosing of vitamin D is not superior to a fixed dose in order to maintain stable 25OHD levels in IBD patients. Cholecalciferol dose of 2,000 IU/day is safe and sufficient during winter period.Septic encephalopathy (SE) is a devastating consequence of sepsis, a hyper-triggered host response against infectious challenge, which ultimately leads to brain damage. Necrostatin 1S The present study examined whether sevoflurane (SVF), a volatile anaesthetic, can counteract the perturbation of homeostasis in a caecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced mouse model of SE. SVF enhances neurocognition in terms of spatial memory improvement via counter-regulation of activated oxidative-inflammatory stress and pyroptotic processes in SE. Further, the beneficial effects of SVF against SE are mediated by activation of silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1)-mediated reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, regulation of thioredoxin (TXN) and thioredoxin interacting protein (TIP) levels, reduction of inflammatory-pyroptotic signalling (NLRP3, caspase 1/11, GSDMD, TLR4 and TRIF) proteins, as well as a reduction of inflammatory cytokine (IL-1β and IL-18) levels. These findings suggest that SVF may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of SE and associated cognitive malfunction.
