Yet a generally applicable solution remains unavailable. Here, we report an accurate and broadly applicable data-driven algorithm for dimensionality reduction. The algorithm, which we named 'feature-augmented embedding machine' (FEM), first learns the structure of the data and the inherent characteristics of the data components (such as central tendency and dispersion), denoises the data, increases the separation of the components, and then projects the data onto a lower number of dimensions. We show that the technique is effective at revealing the underlying dominant trends in datasets of protein expression and single-cell RNA sequencing, computed tomography, electroencephalography and wearable physiological sensors.Antibiotic overprescribing is a global challenge contributing to rising levels of antibiotic resistance and mortality. We test a novel approach to antibiotic stewardship. Capitalising on the concept of "wisdom of crowds", which states that a group's collective judgement often outperforms the average individual, we test whether pooling treatment durations recommended by different prescribers can improve antibiotic prescribing. Using international survey data from 787 expert antibiotic prescribers, we run computer simulations to test the performance of the wisdom of crowds by comparing three data aggregation rules across different clinical cases and group sizes. We also identify patterns of prescribing bias in recommendations about antibiotic treatment durations to quantify current levels of overprescribing. Our results suggest that pooling the treatment recommendations (using the median) could improve guideline compliance in groups of three or more prescribers. Implications for antibiotic stewardship and the general improvement of medical decision making are discussed. selleck kinase inhibitor Clinical applicability is likely to be greatest in the context of hospital ward rounds and larger, multidisciplinary team meetings, where complex patient cases are discussed and existing guidelines provide limited guidance.Micro- and nanofiber (NF) hydrogels fabricated by electrospinning to typically exhibit outstanding high porosity and specific surface area under hydrated conditions. However, the high crystallinity of NFs limits the achievement of transparency via electrospinning. Transparent poly(vinyl alcohol)/β-cyclodextrin polymer NF hydrogels contacted with reverse iontophoresis electrodes were prepared for the development of a non-invasive continuous monitoring biosensor platform of interstitial fluid glucose levels reaching ~ 1 mM. We designed the PVA/BTCA/β-CD/GOx/AuNPs NF hydrogels, which exhibit flexibility, biocompatibility, excellent absorptivity (DI water 21.9 ± 1.9, PBS 41.91 ± 3.4), good mechanical properties (dried 12.1 MPa, wetted 5.33 MPa), and high enzyme activity of 76.3%. Owing to the unique features of PVA/β-CD/GOx containing AuNPs NF hydrogels, such as high permeability to bio-substrates and rapid electron transfer, our biosensors demonstrate excellent sensing performance with a wide linear range, high sensitivity(47.2 μA mM-1), low sensing limit (0.01 mM), and rapid response time ( less then 15 s). The results indicate that the PVA/BTCA/β-CD/GOx/AuNPs NF hydrogel patch sensor can measure the glucose concentration in human serum and holds massive potential for future clinical applications.Bone surface modifications are foundational to the correct identification of hominin butchery traces in the archaeological record. Until present, no analytical technique existed that could provide objectivity, high accuracy, and an estimate of probability in the identification of multiple structurally-similar and dissimilar marks. Here, we present a major methodological breakthrough that incorporates these three elements using Artificial Intelligence (AI) through computer vision techniques, based on convolutional neural networks. This method, when applied to controlled experimental marks on bones, yielded the highest rate documented to date of accurate classification (92%) of cut, tooth and trampling marks. After testing this method experimentally, it was applied to published images of some important traces purportedly indicating a very ancient hominin presence in Africa, America and Europe. The preliminary results are supportive of interpretations of ancient butchery in some places, but not in others, and suggest that new analyses of these controversial marks should be done following the protocol described here to confirm or disprove these archaeological interpretations.Dielectric Discharge Barrier (DBD) plasma actuators are considered as one of the best active electro-hydrodynamic control devices, and are considered by many contemporary researchers. Here a simple electrostatic model, which is improved by authors, and uses the Maxwell's and the Navier-Stokes equations, is proposed for massive optimization computations. This model is used to find the optimum solution for application of a dielectric discharge barrier on a curved surface of a DU25 wind turbine blade airfoil, in a range of 5-18 kV applied voltages, and 0.5 to 13 kHz frequency range. Design variables are selected as the dielectric thickness and material, and thickness and length of the electrodes, and the applied voltage and frequency. The aerodynamic performance, i.e. the lift to drag ratio of the wind turbine blade section is considered as the cost function. A differential evolution optimization algorithm is applied and we have simultaneously found the optimized value of both geometrical and operational parameters. Finally the optimized value at each voltage and frequency are sought, and the optimum aerodynamic performance is derived. The physical effect of each design variable on the aerodynamic performance is discussed. A design relation is proposed to recommend an optimum design for wind turbine applications. In this study, the effects of dissolved-gas concentration in liquid water on the nucleation and growth of bubbles and nanobubble (NB) generation were investigated by measuring the concentration and size distribution of NBs. Three types of liquids with different dissolved-gas concentrations-undersaturated, saturated, and supersaturated deionized (DI) water-were prepared, and NBs were generated via ultrasonic irradiation. As the dissolved-gas concentration increased, a large number of bubbles with relatively large diameters (several tens of micrometers or more) were generated, but the NB concentration decreased. The surface tension decreased with an increase in the dissolved gas concentration, and thus, the tensile strength which required for bubble growth became lower. Therefore, there were barely any NBs in supersaturated conditions because of the accelerated nucleation and bubble growth.
