On 19 Ramadan 40 AH ( after Hijra), Hazrat Ali was praying in the Great Mosque of Khufa, when he was attacked by Abd-al-Rahman ibn Muljam. He was killed by a poison-coated sword while he was in sajdah during Fajr prayer. Hazrat Ali ordered his sons not to attack, and that if Hazrat Ali survived they would be pardoned. However, if he died they should give one equal hit, regardless if he lived or died. Two days later, Hazrat Ali died.

According to a Sheikh, Hazrat Ali did not want his grave to be destroyed by enemies and had a secret burial. Many now believe that Hazrat Ali is buried at the Tomb of Imam Ali in the Imam Ali Mosque at what is now the city of Najaf.
Some people believe his body was taken to Mazar-E-Sharif, an Afghan city, and buried at the blue mosque.

Hazrat Ali (A.S) was caliph (a spiritual leader of Islam) between 656 and 661, during one of the most turbulent periods in Muslim history, which also coincided with the First Fitna ( a time of distress).
When Hazrat Uthman (A.S) was assassinated, rebels were forced to elect a new caliph. Hazrat Ali (A.S), Hazrat Talhah (A.S), and Hazrat Az-Zubayr ibn Al-Awam (A.S). At first, Hazrat Ali (A.S) did not want to accept, but after much urging, he accepted the offer.

Ali initially married Fatimah, who was his most beloved wife. After she died, he got married again. He had four children with Fatimah, Hasan ibn Ali, Husayn ibn Ali, Zaynab bint Ali and Umm Kulthum bint Ali. His other well-known sons were al-Abbas ibn Ali, born to Fatima binte Hizam (Um al-Banin), and Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah. Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah was Ali's son from another wife from Hanifa clan of central Arabia named Khawlah bint Ja'far.
