Maternal and child survival is a major public health problem in haor areas in Bangladesh. Fathers feel responsible as expressed by their capability "to save the future". Using the Capability Framework for Child Growth, we aimed to identify what contextual factors underlie a father's real opportunities to secure a safe delivery, including social norms and beliefs. Parents from households having children less than two years old were asked to participate in two rounds of qualitative research. In total, 25 focus group discussions and eight in-depth interviews were conducted. Late admission to health facilities emerged as the overarching disabling factor for fathers' capability to save the lives of mothers and children. Poor communication about the mother's health condition between spouses and fear for caesarean birth were underlying this late admission. In addition, inadequate advice by local doctors, underdeveloped infrastructure, and seasonal extremities contributed to late admission to health care facilities. The participants indicated that mother's autonomy in haor to seek health care is a constraint. This capability analysis points towards relevant interventions. In addition to the need for an improved health infrastructure, programs to improve maternal and child survival in haor could focus on the gendered household responsibilities and poor communication between spouses.Effector CD8+ T cell activation and its cytotoxic function are positively correlated with improved survival in breast cancer. tRNA-derived fragments (tRFs) have recently been found to be involved in gene regulation in cancer progression. However, it is unclear how interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation affect breast cancer patient survival. We used Kaplan-Meier survival and multivariate Cox regression models to evaluate the effect of interactions between expression of tRFs and T cell activation on survival in 1081 breast cancer patients. Spearman correlation analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis were conducted to identify genes and pathways that were associated with tRFs. tRFdb-5024a, 5P_tRNA-Leu-CAA-4-1, and ts-49 were positively associated with overall survival, while ts-34 and ts-58 were negatively associated with overall survival. read more Significant interactions were detected between T cell activation and ts-34 and ts-49. In cancer diagnostics, the two key analytical challenges for detecting long non-coding RNA biomarkers are i) the low concentration levels (nM to fM range) in which they are found and ii) the analytical method where broad dynamic range is required (four to six orders of magnitude) due to the large variation in expression levels for different HOTAIR RNAs. To meet these challenges, we report on a biosensing platform for the visual (colorimetric) estimation and subsequent electrochemical quantification of ovarian-cancer-specific HOTAIR using a screen-printed gold electrode (SPE-Au). Our assay utilizes a two-step strategy that involves (i) magnetic isolation and purification of target HOTAIR sequences and (ii) subsequent detection of isolated sequences using a sandwich hybridization coupled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The assay achieved a detection limit of 1.0 fM HOTAIR in spiked buffer samples with excellent reproducibility (% RSD ≤ 5%, for n = 3). It was successfully applied to detect HOTAIR in cancer cell lines and a panel of plasma samples derived from patients with ovarian cancer. The analytical performance of the method was validated with standard RT-qPCR. We believe that the proof of concept assay reported here may find potential use in routine clinical settings for the screening of cancer-related lncRNAs.Background We aimed to assess the clinical utility of a previously published score combining the total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) on baseline FDG-PET/CT and pretreatment derived from the neutrophils to lymphocytes ratio (dNLR) for prognostication in NSCLC patients undergoing first-line immunotherapy (IT). Methods In this multicenter retrospective study, 63 advanced NSCLC patients with a PD-L1 tumor proportion score (TPS) ≥50%, who underwent FDG-PET/CT before first-line IT, treated from January 2017 to September 2019, were enrolled. Associations between this score and the progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), disease control rate (DCR), and overall response rate (ORR) were evaluated. Results The median (m) PFS and mOS were 7.7 (95% CI 4.9-10.6) and 12.1 (8.6-15.6) months, respectively, and DCR and ORR were 65% and 58%, respectively. mOS was 17.9 months (14.6 not reached) for the good group versus 13.8 (95%CI 8.4-18.9) and 6.6 (CI 2.0-11.2) months for the intermediate and poor groups, respectively. mPFS was 15.1 (95%CI 12.1-20.0) months for the good group versus 5.2 (1.9-8.5) and 1.9 (95%CI 1.3-2.5) months for the intermediate and poor groups, respectively. The poor prognosis group was associated with DCR and ORR (p less then 0.05). Conclusions The metabolic score combining TMTV on the baseline FDG-PET/CT scan and pretreatment dNLR was associated with the survival and response in a cohort of advanced NSCLC patients with ≥50% PD-L1 receiving frontline IT.We prepared high-performance aromatic copolyamides, containing bithiazole and thiazolo-thiazole groups in their main chain, from aromatic diamines and isophthaloyl chloride, to further improve the prominent thermal behavior and exceptional mechanical properties of commercial aramid fibers. The introduction of these groups leads to aramids with improved strength and moduli compared to commercial meta-oriented aromatic polyamides, together with an increase of their thermal performance. Moreover, their solubility, water uptake, and optical properties were evaluated in this work.
