Hypothesis: Using a magnet will separate iron from the mixture
Prediction: Obtaining a stronger magnet will draw greater amounts of iron from the mixture
Variables: Amount of iron, salt and sand.
Materials:
*2 Small Beakers
*Conical Flask
*Mixture
*Filter Paper
*Magnet
*Water
*Hot Plate
*Plastic sandwich bag
*Gauze Mat
*Bunsen Burner
*Evaporating Dish
Procedure:
1. Place magnet in plastic bag and hold the bag over the mixture. The iron should be drawn to the magnet without touching it.
2. Take the magnet out of the bag and the iron fillings should fall off.
3. Repeat this step several times to make sure all of the iron fillings are no longer in the mixture.
4. Obtain hot water and pour some into the mixture inside the beaker. Let the water cool down.
5. Get the filter paper and make it into a cone shape. Place this at the lip of the conical flask and pour the mixture in.
6. The water should be in the flask and the sand should be in the filter paper.
7. Place the sand in another beaker and put it on the hot plate set to medium
8. Wait until the sand is dry and no longer wet.
9. Use the salt water and pour it into an evaporating dish and place it over the Gauze Mat with the Bunsen Burner under. Light it.
10. You should be left with salt, sand and iron separated from each other
