001). Respondents reporting any gradual-onset surfing injury, compared to those with no injury, averaged 3 more years surfing experience (p less then 0.001), were 3 years older (p less then 0.001), and reported 43h more surfing exposure in the preceding 12 months (p less then 0.001). Conclusions The most common gradual-onset surfing injuries involved the shoulder, low back, and neck, most frequently attributable to paddling. Risk factors for these injuries included board type, higher ability, older age, more hours/year, and years of surfing. These findings affirm the existence of sufficient injury burden to justify investigation of surfing injury prevention initiatives. Objectives Despite physical literacy receiving increased attention as a potential gateway to physical activity participation, research establishing the link between physical literacy as a higher-order latent construct and physical activity is scant. The purpose of this study was to identify physical literacy profiles of children, and in turn, whether these profiles were associated with differences in physical activity participation. Methods Design Prospective cohort study. Children (N = 2015; 49% girls) completed a battery of measures to assess physical literacy (i.e., motor competence, confidence, motivation and enjoyment) in 5th grade. Physical activity participation was reported in the 5th and 8th grades. Latent profile analysis was applied to identify physical literacy profiles and estimate the effects of profile membership on physical activity participation. Results Five unique profiles emerged including high (61.8%), moderate (19.8%) and low physical literacy (6.7%) as well as two inconsistent low physical literacy profiles characterized by divergent high enjoyment (9.7%) and very low enjoyment (2%). SBP-7455 ULK inhibitor After adjusting for socioeconomic status and gender, physical activity participation was greatest among the high physical literacy profile, followed by the moderate physical literacy profile and was lowest across the three low physical literacy profiles. Differences in physical activity participation observed across the profiles remained consistent over time. Conclusions This is the first time a person-centered approach has been applied to understand how the domains of physical literacy interact with each other to influence physical activity patterns. Results suggest physical literacy plays a formative role in shaping physical activity trajectories from a young age. Objective To compare the performance, reliability, and validity of functional tests between women with and without patellofemoral pain. Methods Twenty women with a diagnosis of patellofemoral pain between 18 and 40 years of age and 20 age-matched pain-free controls participated in the study. All participants performed a set of five function tests sitting-rising test, sit-to-stand in 30 seconds, stair-climb test, stair descent test, and six-minute step test. To investigate reliability, participants were assessed on two different days, seven days apart, by two independent investigators blinded to the results of the other investigator. Validity was evaluated through associations with the results on the Anterior Knee Pain Scale. Results Performance in the tests was worse in women with patellofemoral pain than in the control group for the sit-to-stand in 30 seconds (mean difference [MD] 3.4reps; 95%CI 0.4, 6.4), stair-climb test (MD 0.36s; 95%CI 0.1, 0.63), and six-minute step test (MD 45reps; 95%CI 20, 70). No differences were observed for the sitting-rising and stair descent tests. All tests in both groups showed moderate to excellent intra- and inter-rater reliability (intraclass coefficient correlation 0.61 to 0.91 and 0.72 to 0.96, respectively). Finally, only the results on the sit-to-stand in 30 seconds test correlated with the Anterior Knee Pain Scale (r=0.44, p=0.047) in the patellofemoral pain group. Conclusion Women with patellofemoral pain present lower performance on some functional tests. Functional tests are reliable in patients with patellofemoral pain, although they are not associated with the results on the Anterior Knee Pain Scale self-questionnaire.Cystic fibrosis (CF) pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) remain underdiagnosed by CF clinicians. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and calprotectin are inflammatory biomarkers that have the potential to aid in the diagnosis of PEx. 19 subjects (56 stable, 46 PEx visits) from a longitudinal study were included and the diagnostic performance of absolute and fold-change CRP and calprotectin cut-offs to discriminate stable and PEx visits was assessed. Based on Youden's index, optimal absolute and fold-change thresholds to identify PEx were 9.5 mg/L (Sn 76%, Sp 73%; AUC 0.76) and 2.2-fold (Sn 50%, Sp 96%; AUC 0.78) for CRP and 8.1 mg/L (Sn 61%, Sp 79%; AUC 0.72) and 1.3-fold (Sn 57%, Sp 88%; AUC 0.74) for calprotectin. A step-wise algorithm was able to improve diagnostic performance (Sn 80%; Sp 88%). CRP and calprotectin could discriminate stable vs. PEx visits with good performance and appear promising as diagnostic biomarkers but further validation studies are required prior to implementing these diagnostic thresholds. In bacteria small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) interact with their mRNA targets through non-consecutive base-pairing. The loose base-pairing specificity allows sRNAs to regulate large numbers of genes, either affecting the stability and/or the translation of mRNAs. Mechanisms enabling post-transcriptional regulation of the sRNAs themselves have also been described involving so-called sponge RNAs. Sponge RNAs modulate free sRNA levels in the cell through RNA-RNA interactions that sequester ("soak up") the sRNA and/or promote degradation of the target sRNA or the sponge RNA-sRNA complex. The development of complex RNA sequencing strategies for the detection of RNA-RNA interactions has enabled identification of several sponge RNAs, as well as previously known regulatory RNAs able to act as both regulators and sponges. This review highlights techniques that have enabled the identification of these sponge RNAs, the origins of sponge RNAs and the mechanisms by which they function in the post-transcriptional network.
