Because silk fibroins (SFs) are biocompatible materials, they were electrospun and applied as scaffolds for MSC therapy. Consequently, interferon (IFN)-primed human bone marrow MSCs on SF nanofibers were administered into a polymicrobial sepsis murine model. The IL-6 level gradually decreased from 40 ng/mL at 6 h after sepsis to 35 ng/mL at 24 h after sepsis. The IL-6 level was significantly low as 5 ng/mL in primed MSCs on SF nanofibers, and 15 ng/mL in primed MSCs on the control surface. In contrast to the acute response, inflammation-related factors, including HO-1 and COX-2 in chronic liver tissue, were effectively inhibited by MSCs on both SF nanofibers and the control surface at the 5-day mark after sepsis. An in vitro study indicated that the anti-inflammatory function of MSCs on SF nanofibers was mediated through enhanced COX-2-PGE2 production, as indomethacin completely abrogated PGE2 production and decreased the survival rate of septic mice. Thus, SF nanofiber scaffolds potentiated the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory functions of MSCs, and were beneficial as a culture platform for the cell therapy of inflammatory disorders.This is an experiment on the effect of mixing time for alkali-activated cement (AAC) using a binder mixed with ground granulated blast furnace slag (slag) and fly ash (FA) in a ratio of 11 on the mechanical properties. The mixing method of ASTM C305 was used as the basic mixing method, and the following mixing method was changed. Simply adding the same mixing time and procedure, the difference in the order of mixing slag and FA, and controlling the amount of activator and mixed water were considered. As a result of the experiment, the addition of the same mixing time and procedure, pre-injection of slag, and high-alkali mixed water in which half of the activator and mixing water were mixed showed the highest mechanical properties and a dense pore structure. As a result, the design of a blending method that can promote the activation action of slag rather than FA at room temperature was effective in improving the mechanical properties of AAC. In addition, these blending factors showed a clearer effect as the concentration of the activator increased. Through the results of this experiment, it was shown that high-temperature curing, high fineness of the binder, or even changing the setting of the mixing method without the use of excessive activators can lead to an improvement of mechanical properties.The WW domain-containing oxidoreductase gene (WWOX) was cloned 21 years ago as a putative tumor suppressor gene mapping to chromosomal fragile site FRA16D. We investigated the construct validity of the VKP by comparing the performance of young adults (n = 41) and older adults without (n = 52) and with (n = 7) a neurocognitive diagnosis, as well as by examining correlations with standardized measures of verbal and visual memory. The results show that young adults had higher recall than older adults and that the VKP was sensitive to neurocognitive impairment among older adults. The VKP demonstrated moderate to high correlations with other memory tests. These results support the construct validity of the VKP and suggest that it holds promise as a virtual reality-based measure of memory for meal preparation tasks.In most eukaryotic phototrophs, the entire heme synthesis is localized to the plastid, and enzymes of cyanobacterial origin dominate the pathway. Despite that, porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD), the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of hydroxymethybilane in the plastid, shows phylogenetic affiliation to α-proteobacteria, the supposed ancestor of mitochondria. Surprisingly, no PBGD of such origin is found in the heme pathway of the supposed partners of the primary plastid endosymbiosis, a primarily heterotrophic eukaryote, and a cyanobacterium. It appears that α-proteobacterial PBGD is absent from glaucophytes but is present in rhodophytes, chlorophytes, plants, and most algae with complex plastids. This may suggest that in eukaryotic phototrophs, except for glaucophytes, either the gene from the mitochondrial ancestor was retained while the cyanobacterial and eukaryotic pseudoparalogs were lost in evolution, or the gene was acquired by non-endosymbiotic gene transfer from an unspecified α-proteobacterium and functionally replaced its cyanobacterial and eukaryotic counterparts.The COVID-19 pandemic and associated restrictive measures implemented may considerably affect people's lives. This study aimed to assess the well-being of Vietnamese people after COVID-19 lockdown measures were lifted and life gradually returned to normal. An online survey was organized from 21 to 25 April 2020 among Vietnamese residents aged 18 and over. learn more The survey was launched by the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. The WHO-5 Well-Being Index (scored 0-25) was used to score participants' well-being. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to determine the predictors of well-being. A total of 1922 responses were analyzed (mean age 31 years; 30.5% male; 88.2% health professionals or students in the health sector). The mean well-being score was 17.35 ± 4.97. Determinants of a high well-being score (≥13) included older age, eating healthy food, practicing physical exercise, working from home, and adhering to the COVID-19 preventive measures. Female participants, persons worried about their relatives' health, and smokers were more likely to have a low well-being score.
