Covering up to June, 2020Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major disease with high mortality and morbidity globally. Drug resistance and long duration of treatment make antituberculosis drug discovery more challenging. In this review, we summarize recent advances on anti-TB natural products (NPs) and their potential molecular targets in cell wall synthesis, protein production, energy generation, nucleic acid synthesis and other emerging areas. We highlight compounds with activity against drug-resistant TB, and reveal several novel targets including Mtb biotin synthase, ATP synthase, 1,4-dihydroxy-2-naphthoate prenyltransferase and biofilms. These anti-TB NPs and their targets could facilitate target-based screening and accelerate TB drug discovery. We have developed a series of monovalent fluorophore-conjugated affinity probes based on the hapten 3-nitro-4-hydroxy-5-iodophenylacetyl (NIP), which is widely used as a model antigen to study B lymphocytes and the functional principles of B cell antigen receptors (BCRs). We successfully used them in flow-cytometry, confocal and super-resolution microscopy techniques.Area selective atomic layer deposition (AS-ALD) is a promising future technology for the realization of a 5 nm scale Si complementary field effect transistor (FET) and its application in industry. AS-ALD is one of the "bottom-up" technologies, which is a key process that can reduce the cost of fabrication and decrease positional error as an alternative to the conventional "top down" technology. We researched an inhibitor for AS-ALD using molecular layer deposited (MLD) films annealed by electron beam irradiation (EBI). We studied the effect of EBI on an indicone film that was fabricated by using bis(trimethylsilyl)amidodiethyl indium (INCA-1), hydroquinone (HQ), an alucone film fabricated by using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and 4-mercaptophenol (4MP). The EBI effect on MLD films was evaluated by investigating the changes in thickness, composition and structure. In order to observe the selectivity of the annealed indicone film, atomic layer deposition of ZnO was performed on the annealed indicone/silicon line pattern, and it was found that the surface of annealed indicone can inhibit ALD of ZnO for 20 cycles as compared to a Si surface.A simple, quick, effective turn-on fluorescence assay for the determination of fipronil (FIP) was built based on the yellow fluorescence of FAM-aptamer and excellent quenching capability of the oxidized single-walled carbon nanohorns (The oxidized SWCNHs). Oxidized SWCNHs with the great advantage of good dispersibility in solution were generated by link to carboxyl group and were added to a specific FAM-aptamer at an optimal concentration to form an "on-off" oxidized SWCNH/FAM-aptamer fluorescent sensor. The structures of the oxidized SWCNHs were verified, and the comprehensive properties were evaluated by characterization techniques. This paper has exploited oxidized SWCNHs as a quenching agent to detect fipronil for the first time. Under the optimized conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) for fipronil was 3 nM, and the recovery of fipronil varied from 88.6% to 112.7% in different real samples with relative standard deviations (RSDs) not more than 5%. The developed method could be successfully applied for the determination of fipronil in tap water, honey and corn samples. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to an unprecedented international health crisis. COVID-19 clinical presentations cover a wide range from asymptomatic to severe illness and death. Given the limited therapeutic resources and unexpected clinical features of the disease, readily accessible predictive biomarkers are urgently needed to improve patient care and management. We asked the degree to which anemia may influence the outcome of patients with COVID-19. To this end, we identified 3777 patients who were positively diagnosed with COVID-19 between March 1 and April 1 2020 in New York City. We evaluated 2,562 patients with available red blood cell, hemoglobin, and related laboratory values. Multivariable cox proportional hazards regression showed that anemia was a significant independent predictor of mortality (hazard ratio (HR) 1.26, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 1.06-1.51), independent of age, sex, and comorbidities. There was a direct correlation between the degree of anemia and the risk of mortality when hemoglobin was treated as a continuous variable (HRadj 1.05; [CI] 1.01-1.09). The hemoglobin level that was maximally predictive of mortality, was 11.5 g/dL in males and 11.8 g/dL in females. find more These findings identify a routinely measured biomarker that is predictive of disease outcomes and will aid in refining clinical care algorithms and optimize resource allocation. Mechanisms of impacts of anemia on COVID-19 outcome are likely to be multiple in nature and require further investigation. This was a monocentric prospective study testing the efficacy and safety of a first injection of BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) in 112 Allo-HSCT patients. Antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain was tested at the time of the second injection (Roche Elecsys). The study also included a non-randomized control arm of 26 healthy controls. This study shows that a first dose of SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA vaccine is safe and provides a 55% rate of seroconversion in allotransplanted patients compared to 100% for the controls (p less then 0.001). Factors influencing the absence of response in patients were recent transplantation ( less then 2 years), lymphopenia ( less then 1 × 109/L) and immunosuppressive treatment or chemotherapy at the time of vaccination. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has presented numerous challenges to the provision of patient care within hematology. We undertook a questionnaire-based study investigating the experiences and opinions of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in the UK in relation to the different models of follow-up care received during the pandemic. One hundred fifty-four patients completed the online questionnaire. Only 19% of patients had experienced remote clinics prior to the pandemic compared with 91% afterward. After having experience of remote clinics, the proportion of patients who were positive about the remote clinic concept increased from 34% to 52% (P less then .05). However, when asked to compare their experiences with face to face versus remote clinics, 48% preferred face-to-face clinics compared with 17% preferring remote clinics (35% expressed no preference). During the pandemic, frequency of blood tests was unchanged for 71% of patients, although they were performed in a number of different locations.
