It is therefore recommended to thoroughly study the theory before taking the test.
For instance, you may be asked to answer a question about the law regarding driving in groups. Ask your instructor for help if you are unsure of the answer. You'll notice that the more you study for the test, the more confident you'll be when it's time to take it. The test will be conducted on real NYC streets and you will be required to execute various maneuvers, such as three-point turns or parallel parking. You will also need to demonstrate a smooth acceleration and brake and safe driving in the event of an emergency.
If you pass the driving test in a practical manner, you'll be issued an A1AM driving license category that is valid for until 15 years old. You can add additional categories to your licence at any point, but you must meet the minimum age requirements for that particular vehicle type.
In addition to passing the theory and practical tests, you have to complete a first aid certification and have a criminal record check. Depending on the age of your driver, you may have to obtain a probationary license before you are allowed to drive larger vehicles. A lot of driving schools and land transport offices will require you to have a probationary car license before you can start training for your A1 licence.
You can find out more about the various vehicle categories and the requirements for them on the AA website. You can also check out what the driving licence models look like along with their security features as well as the categories of vehicle and entitlements that are listed on them.
Be aware that the AA website is only available in English. It is recommended that you visit your local land transportation office to apply for a driving license, particularly when you don't speak the language.
Getting an A1 driving licence allows you to drive vehicles that have a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of 8,250kg. You can also drive a trailer and vehicle combination that weighs up to 750kg. Before the 19th of January, 2013, an entire category B license was needed to drive mopeds and tricycles.
