Our findings underscore the need to raise awareness about the unsupported claims of a lower hazard of using tobacco products or possible protective effects against COVID-19 and to promote cessation programs. This study evaluated the potential of Punica granatum peel ethanol extract (PPEE) in attenuating the liver and kidney tissue injury induced by vancomycin (VM) treatment in rats. Fifty rats were distributed equally into five groups control group, PPEE-administered group (100 mg/kg BW/day for 2 weeks; orally), VM-treated group (443.6 mg/kg BW, every alternate day for 2 weeks; intraperitoneally), pre-treated group, and concomitant-treated group. The biochemical response and the histopathology of the hepatic and renal tissue of the treated animals were assessed. The results showed that VM treatment induced substantial hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, evidenced by a significant elevation in tissue injury and lipid oxidative (malondialdehyde) and inflammatory response (C-reactive protein) biomarkers, with lowered antioxidants and protein levels. Additionally, VM treatment induced various morphological, cytotoxic, vascular, and inflammatory perturbations as well as upregulation in the immune-expression of Caspase-3 and downregulation of BCL-2. Moreover, PPEE co-treatment was found to reduce the VM-induced toxicity by protecting the tissue against reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated oxidative damage, and inflammation as well as hinder the apoptotic cell death by modulating the expression of apoptosis-related proteins. Thus, we conclude that the PPEE administration showed more restoring efficacy when administered prior to VM medication.Human-induced (i.e., secondary) salinization affects aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem functioning worldwide. While agriculture or resource extraction are the main drivers of secondary salinization in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, the application of deicing road salt in winter can be an important source of salts entering freshwaters in cold regions. Alpine rivers are probably affected by salinization, especially in highly populated mountain regions, although this remains to be explored. In this study, we analyzed multi-year conductance time series from four rivers in the European Alps and demonstrated that the application of deicing road salt is linked to peaking rivers' salinity levels during late winter/early spring. Especially in small catchments with more urban surfaces close to the rivers, conductance increased during constant low-flow periods in late winter and was less correlated with discharge than in summer. learn more Thus, our results suggest that small rivers highly connected to urban infrastructures are prone to considerable salinity peaks during late winter/early spring. Given the low natural level of salinities in Alpine rivers, the aquatic biodiversity might be significantly affected by the recorded changes in conductance, with potential consequences on ecosystem functioning. Thereby, we urge the research community to assess the impact of secondary salinization in Alpine rivers and call for an implementation of management practices to prevent the degradation of these pristine and valuable ecosystems. The main purpose of this study is to examine the democracy-environmental degradation nexus in 26 Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries from 1990 through 2015 by using panel data estimation methods, performing well under cross-sectional dependence. Empirical results are as follows (i) Tests show that cross-section dependence exists among panel members, and slope coefficients are heterogeneous, respectively, and (ii) long-term coefficient estimation results with Augmented Mean Group estimator show that democracy, non-renewable energy consumption, and real income per capita have statistically significant negative effects on environmental quality, whereas renewable energy consumption has a positive effect. There is also no statistically significant relationship between urbanization and environmental quality. These findings show the poor functioning of democracy in addressing environmental issues among OECD countries; therefore, raising environmental quality conflicts with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of creating strong institutions and economic growth targets. Moreover, promoting renewable energy consumption may be an effective alternative in reducing environmental degradation; therefore, it can be said that promoting clean energy use and raising the SDG environmental quality targets are in harmony.Surfactants are widely used in many chemical industries and as primary components of cleaning detergents due to their specific characteristics, which in turn results in high pollution of domestic and industrial wastewaters by such substances. In this study, the mechanistic pathways of the adsorption of cationic benzyl-dimethyl-dodecyl ammonium bromide (BDDAB) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants on kaolinite clay in water were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption of anionic surfactant (SDS) on kaolinite is better compared with cationic surfactant (BDDAB), wherein the ♦maximum adsorption capacity was found 161.4 μmol g-1 and 234 μmol g-1 for BDDAB and SDS, respectively. Adsorption kinetics were the best suited to pseudo-second-order model for both BDDAB and SDS with an adsorption rate constant of 0.028 g μmol-1 min-1 and 0.023 g μmol-1 min-1, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption of BDDAB by kaolinite showed that the isotherm adsorption tended to follow the Langmuir-Freundlich and Freundlich isotherm models. However, the SDS adsorption isotherm obeyed only the Langmuir-Freundlich model. In order to effectively promoting green consumption, this paper constructs a theoretical model from the perspective of double-entry mental accounting to study the impact of perceived value and consumption sensitivity on green consumption intention. Conducting a large-scale empirical study, we analyzed the influence of perceived value on green consumption intention, tested the mediating effect of double-entry mental accounting, and explored the moderating effect of consumption sensitivity on perceived value and green consumption intention. The results indicate that perceived benefits are significantly positively correlated with green consumption intention, and perceived sacrifices are significantly negatively correlated with green consumption intention. In addition, perceived benefits have a greater impact on green consumption intention than perceived sacrifices. Double-entry mental accounting plays a significant mediating role on the path from perceived value to green consumption intention. Compared with the mediating effect of the coefficient of pleasure attenuation and the coefficient of pain buffering, the mediating effect of coefficient of pleasure attenuation is stronger and the mediating path is more important.
