How to Get a Driving Licence - Category A1
You can drive motorcycles up to 125 ccm with a power of 11 kW with an A1 licence if you attended instruction at a continuing driving school. You can also drive trikes and other motor vehicles that have three-drive.
You can get an A1 license at the age of 16 years old. You must pass the theory test as well as the practical test.
What is my driving skill?
A category A1 license permits you to ride two or three-wheeled motorbikes. They have an engine size up to 125cc and the maximum power output of 11kW. This licence can also be used to operate a motor tricycle provided it has the maximum power output of 15kW. This licence also permits you to drive a moped with a trailer.
If you'd like to ride a more powerful motorbike, you will need a category AM licence instead. This permits motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of up to 125cc and that have a power output of not greater than 35 kW.
Drivers with a category C license (which they can get after passing the CPC four-part test) can drive large-sized vehicles with a maximum mass of 3,500kg. This vehicle is heavier than other automobiles and you'll need to be able transport a large amount of weight.
This category is less restrictive than Category C. You can tow trailers up to 750kg with this license. This is a great opportunity to gain experience driving larger vehicles, before taking the full category C test which is required to drive HGVs.
Anyone who has experience driving the less powerful categories A or A1 will discover that it is easier to pass a test for category A2, which allows the use of motorbikes that have up to 35kW. This is called 'grandfathering, which was designed to encourage drivers to gain experience on smaller vehicles before attempting to drive a more powerful one. In fact when you have two years of experience with category A1 motorcycles, you can bypass the theory and practical tests, and will only have to take a skills test. This test will be conducted by a recognized training organization. It should be a professional school that has instructors who are competent to instruct you on how to drive safely and confidently. The driving lessons will help you familiarise yourself with the vehicle you're learning to drive in addition to teach you the essential traffic regulations.
Age requirements for seniors
In a majority of countries, the age at which you are able to obtain a driver's license is between 16 and 18 years. After this age, a graduated license system is in place. Depending on the license class the licensee may have to pass a written or physical test before being granted an authorization.
Category A1 permits drivers to drive motor vehicles with no more than 9 seats and with an allowed mass not exceeding 3,500 kg (7,700 lb). This includes mopeds (motorcycles that have a displacement of up to 125 cubic centimeters and a power rating of up to 11 kW) and motor tricycles.
You can also drive on a quad bike with an A1 subcategory driver's licence in the event that the engine's displacement is under 250 cc and the power is below 15 kW. You can only obtain A1 category license if it is your first motorcycle license or if you have a full motorcycle license of another category (category A2 B, A or).
You must pass a theory test before you are able to be licensed. You can prepare for the test in several ways, including attending a driving school or by self-learning.
You can take the theory exam, which is 50 multiple-choice answers. You must score at minimum 41 points to pass. If you are less than 16, you must have an adult along with you when you take the theory test.
You will receive a driver's permit that is valid for two years if you pass the theory exam. You must carry the permit with you whenever you drive in a vehicle. You can apply for a driving licence at the age of 17.
You must hold an driver's license of at minimum category B for a minimum of two years before you can apply for a driver's licence of the next class. For instance, you can only apply for category A1 if have been driving a motorcycle that is a class A2 or higher for at least two years.
Once you have obtained your A1 license, you can add a category driving other types of vehicles, such as a car or tractor. In the majority of cases, you do not need to retake the practical or theory tests when adding categories. However, it is essential to check the details of your country's laws and regulations for more information.
Theory test
The test of theory is an essential part of obtaining your category A1 license. You can take it either prior to or after you've completed the mandatory basic training (CBT). You must be able to pass both parts of the test to be able to get your motorcycle license.

The test is conducted by a qualified examiner who will evaluate your driving abilities and how you comply with traffic laws. The AA website only exists in English. It is suggested that you visit your local office for transportation to apply for a driving licence especially in the event that you don't speak the language.
A1 drivers can drive vehicles with up to 8,250kg in mass. You can also drive trailers and vehicles combinations with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 750kg. A full category B driver's licence was required prior to the 19th of January 2013 to be able to drive tricycles and mopeds. Drivers who had a full Category B licence before 19 January 2013 are still entitled to their category AM entitlement to tricycles and mopeds so long as they have not received an entire Category C licence since that date.
