Seclusion is considered a necessity when alternatives have failed. There is a consensus that seclusion has no therapeutic benefit, which justifies efforts to reduce the practice. Nested case controls were used to compare 72 afternoon shifts on which seclusion occurred to 216 afternoon shifts on which no seclusion occurred, between 2010 and 2013, at an Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Unit.

Increased seclusion was predicted by a lower nurse to patient ratio, more male nurses on shift, fewer female nurses on shift, the presence of agency/temporary nurses on shift, greater combined years of mental health experience, and lower total HoNOSCA behavior subscale score. Unique predictors that increased risk of seclusion included greater number of male nurses and the presence of agency/temporary nurses, while a greater number of female nurses decreased risk of seclusion.

Nurses play a unique role in seclusion outcomes that are separate to patient-factors and act as both protective and risk factors for seclusion. Changes can be made to staffing to reduce seclusion and future research should investigate why these nurse-factors contribute to seclusion.

The antibiotic concentration in abdominal drainage fluid is very important for the treatment of patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Previous studies show that quinolones and carbapenems have high abdominal tissue levels, whereas aminoglycosides fail to penetrate into abdominal tissue in sufficient concentrations. However, there are limited data with respect to vancomycin. This case aims to investigate the penetration of vancomycin to abdominal drainage fluid in a 44-year-old SAP patient.

We report a case of a 44-year-old female with SAP, on treatment of vancomycin. The second gestational trimester is a very important period for male genital development. We analyzed the testicular and prostatic volume growth and compared them to the biometric parameters in human fetuses.

We studied 64 testes and 32 prostates from 32 fetuses, aged 10-22 weeks postconception. Fetuses were evaluated regarding total length, crown-rump length, and bodyweight. The same observer performed all the measurements. After testicular and prostatic dissection, the prostate and testicular length, width and thickness were recorded with the aid of computer programs (Image Pro and ImageJ software, version 1.46r). Testicular volume (TV) and prostatic volume (PV) were calculated using the ellipsoid formula. Statistical analysis was performed with the GraphPad Prism program (version 6.01).

Prompt Mental Health Care (PMHC, Norwegian adaption of Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) has shown effects on symptoms of anxiety and depression compared to treatment as usual (TAU). In this secondary analysis, we examine the effectiveness of PMHC among clients presenting with symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and/or agoraphobia on core symptoms at 6- and 12-month follow-up.

Randomized controlled trial in two PMHC sites (7030 ratio PMHCTAU). Of participants, 61.3% (n = 472) scored at caseness for SAD and 47.7% (n = 367) for agoraphobia (40% both). Effects on SAD avoidance and physiological discomfort (SPIN-9), SAD cognitions (ATQ-SA), agoraphobic avoidance (MIA-8), and agoraphobic cognitions (ATQ-AP) were examined in piecewise growth models.

This investigation uses geometric morphometric methods to retest this hypothesis and its prediction that extending the ontogenetic trajectory of a chimpanzee would produce an adult gorilla-like cranial morphology.

Forty-three 3D cranial landmarks were collected from an ontogenetic series of 76 Pan troglodytes and 58 Gorilla gorilla specimens. Ontogenetic trajectories of cranial shape change were computed via multivariate regression of Procrustes aligned coordinates against LnCS (size vector) and molar eruption stage (developmental vector). These two vectors were then used in developmental simulations to extend the ontogenetic trajectories of adult chimpanzees. Allometric trajectories of chimpanzees and gorillas were also directly compared using Procrustes ANOVA.
