How to Choose the Best Coffee Pod Machine
If you love the idea of a quick, mess-free coffee fix in the morning, a pod-based machine is something you should consider. How do you choose the best one?
With a nod to retro design, this machine sports the SMEG and Lavazza branding across its front. It is more expensive and requires a larger space on your counter. It's a high-performance pod coffee maker that is solid.
1. Nespresso Compatible
If you are an avid Nespresso lover, you'll want to select the right coffee maker that is compatible with capsules from this brand. You may want to choose one that can utilize other capsules, including organic and Fairtrade or specialty flavoured pods. These are often available for the same price as the original ones and some include an integrated milk frother which allows you to make the perfect cappuccino or latte.
The debut of Bruvi into the pod machine market in 2022 was received with excitement. The brightly-colored device promised a variety of drinks and a more satisfying coffee experience than any other pod machine, and pods that you could throw away without worrying about the environment.
It's a three-pronged winner. The compact pod coffee machine is affordable and makes a rich, robust espresso every time. It's also among the most silent models available which means you can make a cup of Joe before your morning alarm rings.
The Bruvi is available in two sizes and can be adjusted to the type of drink you're making. If you're brewing cappuccino or latte, it has three texture and temperature settings for milk so you can get your froth on. It can also make hot cocoa, which is ideal for adults and kids who are looking to relax.
A sleep feature that is programmable is another feature that's a plus. It goes into standby mode after one hour without any use. It's also simple to clean, and uses only a tiny amount of water. Think about a machine with an open capsule holder that can be removed to make emptying it easier.
There are a few other accessories you can add to your coffee maker, including a milk frother (unless it's included in the model you purchase). You might also want to consider a coffee filter that is reusable and can be used with capsules that can be reused. A thermometer or water kettle to control temperature precisely is a great option.
2. Easy to Clean
A coffee pod machine is a convenient way to start your day with a hot cup of coffee. In a few minutes, you can have freshly brewed coffee. Just add a pod and then switch it on. They are simple to clean and don't require regular maintenance. They require only a water tank refill and a descaling every six months.
Keurig's K-Cups come with the broadest selection of choices on the market including national brands as well as popular grocery store brands like Folgers, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Dunkin' Donuts. There are even some non-coffee options, such as tea and hot cocoa, available in K-Cups from several different brands. However, you don't have to use Keurig's K-Cups to make a great cup of coffee. In fact, you can also make use of filter capsules that can be reused made of paper or plastic that hold ground coffee or pre-loaded drip pods and even loose grounds of coffee.
A lot of these machines based on pods don't produce a rich, strong brew that can be able to stand up to the most discriminating palate. Our tests discovered that some pod coffee makers made watery or bitter cups of coffee. Others were so difficult operate that they occupied a lot of space on your counter, and they were also likely to run loudly.
There are high-end coffee makers that offer the convenience and consistency of single-serve machines, without the wasteful packaging and disappointing taste. Some have a built-in milk frother for frothing and pouring your latte or cappuccino, and some sell an additional frother that which you can connect to the machine to provide an amazing foamy topping to your drinks.
In addition to making the best coffee and brewing great coffee, these modern pod coffee machines have also taken steps to address the increasing environmental concerns that comes with single-serve pods made from plastic. Both Keurig and Nespresso have made their aluminum pods recyclable by replacing them with polypropylene, and the latter now offers free capsule-recycling bags which can be picked up at any of its retail outlets or UPS locations. A recently launched competitor, Bruvi, uses its own pods that can only be used in its own brewer. They have been designed to break down in landfills quickly, without leaving any microplastics behind.
3. Fast Brewing
A pod coffee machine is a lifesaver for those who don't want to grind beans or boil kettles. These machines are foolproof and allow you to brew coffee, tea or espresso in minutes without any cleaning up. Although these machines produce more environmental waste than their drip counterparts, they're still significantly less time-consuming than brewing a batch of whole beans in a French press or pour-over.
A company based out of LA known as Bruvi launched its BV-01 pod-based machine at the end of 2022. It promised to make more flavorful single serve coffee, offer more drinks options than pod-based machines and provide reusable capsules which could be taken away without breaking into tiny microplastics. And while the Bruvi brewer is more expensive than Keurig and Nespresso models, it's an excellent all-around device that is like the beginning of a new era in pod coffee.
One of the most important aspects to think about when purchasing the coffee pod maker is the size of the serving. which coffee machines are best can serve single-serve cups in a wide range of sizes, from giant travel mugs down to 2-ounce espresso shots. Some machines can brew whole pots of coffee. Some models even come with milk frothers that can be added to create a creamy cappuccino, latte or the latte.
Another important factor to be considered is the design of a pod-based coffee machine. The color and finish of the machine and the location and size of the reservoir for water and pod compartment will affect how your machine looks on your counter. Some brands offer different colored pods, so you can alter your drink to suit the mood or season.
Pod coffee makers are usually designed to be compact, taking up less space than traditional single-serve or drip brewers. While a compact footprint is great but it's equally crucial to make sure your machine is able to brew several cups in between refills. For the average home the water tank that can hold at least 40 ounces will suffice for the majority of pod coffee makers.
4. Variety of Drinks
Pod machines are surprisingly versatile, and based on the brand, they are able to make a variety of drinks. Certain brands, like the popular Keurig system and Sage's Nespresso collaboration, can brew four different sizes of drinks, while others offer only two or one. Some machines can also make hot cocoa, tea and cold drinks.
Some pod coffee machines have built-in milk frothers that can create cappuccinos, lattes and other drinks that are frothy. Others, however, need an additional or conjoined jug to accomplish this. The best milk-frothing coffee machines are easy to operate and provide precise control. They also feature sleek designs that fits in any kitchen.
The Grind One is a great example. It's a sleek design that's a step away from the curvatures you see on other pod coffee makers and is smaller than many Keurig models, making it ideal for those with small kitchens or dorm rooms. The water tank is easy to access and can hold up to 40 grams. The used capsules are deposited in an attached container. Other than keeping the reservoir full and decaling every six months or this means that the machine needs minimal upkeep.
The machine is more expensive than some of the other models we've reviewed, but it offers a premium experience. The stainless steel finish brushed is sleek and modern and the drip tray can be adjusted to fit tall or short espresso cups as well as travel mugs. It can be used to brew five different beverages, due to a custom barcode scanner that scans each compatible pod and automatically adjusts its settings to produce the perfect cup.
It's the most beautiful machine we have tested. It also produces a great tasting brew - especially for an automatic. The reason we didn't award it the top spot is because of its lack of milk-frothing capabilities. its only real option is to use dried skimmed milk capsules which don't taste like fresh-squeezed milk. We would have awarded this machine the top spot in the event that it had an integrated milk frother.
