Space Saver

The microwave is a popular appliance in the kitchen, but it can also take up valuable countertop space. You can reclaim valuable counter space by moving the microwave to a new location, like an island in the kitchen.

Over-the-range microwaves (OTRs) are an increasingly popular choice. in built microwave is tucked away in a neatly placed above your stove, this option is particularly useful in kitchens that are smaller and space is limited. Furthermore, certain OTR models double as a vent hood for your cooktop, which is beneficial in reducing the buildup of steam.

Another way to save space is to install a built-in microwave which blends seamlessly into your cabinetry. This can give you an elegant, seamless appearance that can match the kitchen cabinets and fixtures in color, finish, or style. It can also create an elegant look in your kitchen. This is great for homeowners that prefer an uncluttered, clean appearance.

However, installing a built-in microwave may require a professional installation or remodeling of your kitchen. Depending on your home's layout you may be able to cut a space in walls to accommodate the appliance, however, this will require the proper framing and reinforcement which should be left to professionals. Built-in microwaves require ventilation to avoid overheating or damaging the appliance. According to Sam Cipiti of R. M. Tunis Kitchens and Baths, in Chevy Chase, Maryland the minimum cabinet depth for an oven with built-ins is 15 inches. However certain manufacturers offer trim kits with up to 1 1/2 inch of extra space to allow for ventilation.

Another option that can be used to save space is a microwave with a drawer that can be installed under your counter or inside an island. This configuration is simple to use, suitable for all users and requires less countertop space. It also helps prevent hot dishes or containers from falling off the edge of the microwave or being crushed.

The design of the door is the final factor to consider when choosing a space-saving microwavable. Many manufacturers offer an open, swing-out or slide-out door that opens in the same motion as other kitchen appliances to help you seamlessly integrate your microwave into your cooking routine. They're also not as mobile, and you aren't able to easily alter the model should you want something different.

If you put your microwave above the range, you'll need a larger kitchen to accommodate the ventilation system that is required by this arrangement. You'll need either a ducting system that carries smoke away from the home or a recirculating ventilation system that draws air through the microwave and into the home. For smaller kitchens think about a separate built-in microwave that can be incorporated inside a cabinet, wall or island.

Convenient Controls

Microwaves have a wide range of controls based on the model. Some of the features include turntables, presets like defrosting or reheating, as well as buttons for plus-30 minutes. Certain models come with child safety features to prevent accidental operation.

Many microwaves come with pre-programmed recipes and cooking times that make the process of cooking food faster and simpler. This feature is useful for those who aren't sure how long to cook certain foods or for those who aren't familiar with the particular cooking techniques that are used in different cuisines.

KitchenAid provides a variety of microwaves with built-ins and over-the-range microwaves that are designed to match your other appliances in style and design to create an elegant look. They typically have the same internal components as countertop models, but with some exceptions. These models come in different sizes, and some are designed to be able to fit in small spaces. Their exteriors could have doors that open in a swing-out style from right to left or drop-down design.

Some over-the-range microwaves like those from Whirlpool(r) can also serve as vent hoods for your kitchen stove and use an exhaust system that is built-in to let fumes out and circulate air. Some microwaves come with a built-in charcoal filter to eliminate moisture and odors from your kitchen.

Countertop models are placed on your kitchen counter and do not require venting hookups or special installation making them an excellent option for rental homes or anyone looking to stay clear of costly renovations to their kitchens. Certain models include trim kits that can close the gap between your microwave and other countertop appliances such as coffee makers bread makers, toaster ovens or bread ovens.

Energy Efficiency

Microwaves require less energy to heat water and food than other cooking methods. They also consume less energy than traditional stovetop ovens due to the fact that they focus the microwaves' energy on the liquid within instead of heating the air or other elements surrounding it. Because of this, they can heat dishes much faster than conventional ovens. They can be placed on the upper or lower cabinets and are available in modern or retro styles to suit any kitchen.

In this supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking ("SNOPR") the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy proposes new or modified energy conservation standards for microwave ovens which will help consumers save money on their operating costs. The Energy Policy and Conservation Act ("EPCA") requires DOE to periodically determine whether the more stringent standards are economically viable and technologically feasible and could result in significant energy savings.

This SNOPR contains the analyses and findings that DOE carried out to assess the effects on consumers of the new or revised energy conservation standards for microwave ovens. The analysis includes a market and technology assessment as well as a screening analysis of engineering analysis, and a national impact analysis.

The energy usage analysis calculates the annual average microwave ovens operating hours in households from a representative sample. It forms the basis for the energy savings assessments and the other consumer analyses in this SNOPR. The analysis is built on RECS field data from a variety of regions and considers the different usage patterns of microwave ovens in different households, as well as the variations in the regional electricity prices.

To determine the impact of potential new or amended standards on household operating costs, DOE conducted LCC and PBP analyses to estimate the lifetime cost of buying and using microwave ovens at different efficiency levels. The LCC and PBP calculations utilize the computer model built on Monte Carlo simulations to incorporate uncertainties and variations into the analyses.

In addition to the analyses of energy use and LCC/PBP In addition to the energy-use and LCC/PBP analyses, this SNOPR includes an assessment of the national impact of new or amended standards based on the NIA spreadsheet model. The NIA model calculates the industry's net present value ("INPV") in terms of energy savings resulting from possible new or amended standards in terms of energy savings on site and FFC energy savings.
