Many patients suffer from dementia in its most common form, Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, the levels of IL-1β, TGF-β and CRP, which are involved in the inflammatory response in Alzheimer's disease and its mild cognitive impairment (MCI), were measured and analyzed.
Seventy nine subjects participated in this study (mean age 75.56 years, female 54.3%, AD 26, MCI 28, normal 25). The overall cognitive function of the subjects and the severity of the disease stage were assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K), the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), the Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) and the Geriatric Depression Scale-Korean (GDS-K).
It was observed that patients with AD had significantly higher levels of IL-1β and TGF-β than the patients with MCI and normal controls. In addition, the MCI group showed a statistically significantly higher TGF-β concentration than the normal group.
These results suggest that IL-1β and TGF-β may be useful biological markers for patients with Alzheimer's disease.

This study prospectively assessed the performance of liver stiffness measurements using point shear-wave elastography (p-SWE) in comparison with transient elastography (TE) in patients with biopsy-proven nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Fifty-six consecutive adult patients with a histological diagnosis of NAFLD prospectively underwent TE and p-SWE on the same day. The median of 10 measurements (SWE-10), the first five (SWE-5), and the first three (SWE-3) measurements were analyzed for p-SWE. Liver biopsy was considered as the reference standard for liver fibrosis grade. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and areas under the ROC curves (AUROCs) were calculated to assess the performance of TE and p-SWE for the diagnosis of significant (F2-F4) and advanced fibrosis (F3-F4).
Forty-six patients (27 men, 19 women; mean age, 54.7±9.1 years) had valid p-SWE and TE measurements. Twenty-seven patients (58.7%) had significant fibrosis and 18 (39.1%) had advanced fibrosis. For significant fibrosis, both SWE-10 (AUROC, 0.787; P=0.002) and SWE- 5 (AUROC, 0.809; P=0.001) provided higher diagnostic performance than TE (AUROC, 0.719; P=0.016) and SWE-3 (AUROC, 0.714; P=0.021), albeit without statistical significance (P=0.301). For advanced fibrosis, SWE-5 showed higher diagnostic performance (AUROC, 0.809; P<0.001) than TE (AUROC, 0.799; P<0.001), SWE-10 (AUROC, 0.797; P<0.001), and SWE-3 (AUROC, 0.736; P=0.003), although the differences were not statistically significant (P=0.496). The optimal SWE-10 and SWE-5 cutoff values were ≥8.4 and ≥7.8 for significant fibrosis, and ≥9.1 and ≥8.8 for advanced fibrosis, respectively.
TE and p-SWE showed similar performance for the diagnosis of significant and advanced fibrosis in NAFLD patients.

Surprisingly little research has been directed at clarifying antecedents of locus of control (LOC) orientations in adult men apart from a few small studies. We previously identified a number of independent antecedents associated with women's LOC, including features of their parents and early childhood. selleckchem This raised the question as to whether these factors were also associated with the development of LOC in men. Methods To identify antecedents of LOC orientations in a representative population of women we previously analysed information concerning characteristics of their parents and their own childhood experiences using pregnant women taking part in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Here we use the same design to determine whether their male partners have similar antecedents of LOC orientation. As previously, we use a hypothesis-free exposome technique using all available information on the parents and childhood of the individuals. Results We show that men had many of the same antecedent characteristics as the women - in particular, their mother's year of birth and father's social group, being exposed to cigarette smoke prenatally, starting to smoke regularly before the age of 11, and having a friend die were all associated with being external. Associations of internality common to both were warm maternal care, being breast fed, being born in an area other than that where they currently live, attending boarding school and having a parent admitted to hospital. Conclusions In general, the antecedents of male external and internal personalities have many similarities to those of women, thus providing some features to inform the possible theoretical background as to how LOC might develop over time.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of β-mannanase on growth performance, carcass characteristics, excreta microflora, blood constituents, and nutrient digestibility in broiler chickens.
A total of 680 one-d-old Ross 308 (as hatched) broiler chickens were used in a 35-d growth assay. Chicks were sorted into pens with 17 birds/pen and 10 pens/treatment. Treatment diets were contained either 44% or 48% crude protein (CP) soybean meal (SBM) with or without β-mannanase.
Using SBM containing 48% CP led to an improvement (P<0.05) in feed conversion ratio (FCR) from d 1-14. Addition of β-mannanase to the diets significantly improved body weight gain (BWG) and FCR from d 1-14. During overall experimental period, BWG was affected (p<0.05) by CP level of SBM and inclusion of β-mannanase, but FCR and feed intake were not affected. Carcass characteristics were not influenced by treatment diets. The results showed that digestibility of dry matter (DM), nitroge effects on growth performance and digestibility of nutrients, but addition of β-mannanase to the 44% CP diet improved the growth performance of chickens without any effects on carcass characteristics.
