Sometimes, patients with aura and migraine are referred to the ophthalmologic unit with the diagnosis of acute angle closure attack. Thus, we discussed the way an ophthalmologist could make a difference between these two entities.A Caucasian male with known severe aortic stenosis was referred to our Ophthalmology Department after undergoing cardiac surgery using extracorporeal circulation. Signs of retinal ischaemia were found during fundus examination and neuroimaging showed posterior cerebral artery occlusion.Acute idiopathic maculopathy (AIM) is a condition reported to occur in young adults, which is classically characterized by the development of a unilateral serous macular detachment that commonly follows a flu-like illness. A 27-year-old female patient complained of diminution of vision in her left eye, of acute onset and progressive course for 2 weeks. She had a history of a flu-like condition 2 weeks prior. Following clinical examination, multimodal imaging analysis, and laboratory investigations, she was diagnosed with unilateral AIM, associated with atypical findings that were not previously reported to occur with AIM, including cystoid macular edema, flame shaped retinal hemorrhages, extensive hard exudates, and juxta-foveal yellowish intraretinal lesions. This may have been due to the more severe inflammation and concomitant phlebitis that was associated with this case compared to previously reported AIM cases.A 35-year-old male smoker presented with reduced vision in OD for the previous two years. He reported a further drop in the vision for the previous two weeks after he underwent focal laser elsewhere. Clinical examination and multimodal imaging confirmed a giant tear of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and a focal leak of CSCR. He was managed with the focal laser to the active leak and lifestyle modification. The ocular condition remained stable. RPE rips in CSCR have been reported to occur spontaneously or with an intervention like exogenous use of steroids, or photodynamic therapy (PDT). This case highlighted the fact that focal laser can precipitate RPE rip in a case of CSCR with tense bullous PED. The physician should keep this fact in mind while counselling the patient before a laser procedure and suspect an RPE rip in a patient with CSCR who presents with an acute onset of vision loss.Purpose The aim of this paper was to show the usefulness of imagery in better documenting the pathology of the anterior segment. Methods The article comprises clinical cases, insisting on how imagery was essential in establishing the diagnosis or the therapeutic plan. Results Lack of imagery would have made establishing a proper diagnosis much more difficult. Conclusions Although clinical examination is simple and offers a fairly good amount of information, some particular cases of anterior segment pathology need additional investigations, every method having its indications and limits.Purpose To describe the central three-dimensional (3D) thickness profile of the macula (CMT) and the subfoveal choroidal region (SFCT) in diabetic retinopathy (DR) following panretinal laser photocoagulation (PRP) using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Methods A prospective observational study including 17 eyes with proliferative DR (PDR) and 27 eyes with severe nonproliferative DR (sNPDR)] for whom PRP was done. All subjects received SS-OCT imaging before and 3 months after PRP (POM#3). SFCT and CMT changes were analysed at both visits. Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC) and Coefficients of Variation (COV) were used to test the accuracy of thickness data. Results SFCT has thinned from 233 ± 54 µm before PRP treatment to 216 ± 51 µm 3 months later (p less then 0.001). Likewise, CMT declined at POM#3 as compared to pre-PRP status (p less then 0.001). SFCT was thinner in PDR before and at POM#3 (p less then 0.05) than sNPDR; whereas, no significant difference was observed in CMT between both groups in the two visits. No significant changes were found between groups in SFCT and CMT at POM#3. Regarding reliability, ICCSFCT=0.98 and ICCCMT=0.99. The COVs for CMT and SFCT were 5.03% and 5.91%, respectively. Conclusion The mean SFCT and CMT decreased 3 months after PRP. We also reported reliability of SFCT measurements in DR using SS-OCT. Methods Eighteen eyes of young patients with mild to moderate keratoconus were selected. General ocular examinations such as refraction, visual acuity, and ocular aberrations were performed. Three types of RGP contact lenses, i.e., Boston, Senso Select and Wohlk, were fitted using the cross over method. Repeated measures analysis of variance and Mauchly's test of sphericity were used to compare the average of residual high order aberrations and visual acuity after fitting each type of lens. Results Vertical coma was -0.271 ± 0.37 µm before fitting and decreased to 0.081 ± 0.08 µm with Boston, 0.098 ± 0.08 µm with Senso Select and 0.124 ± 0.08 µm with Wohlk contact lens (P-value less then 0.0001). The mean RMS (root mean square) for high order aberrations decreased from 0.526 ± 0.43 µm before fitting to 0.256 ± 0.09 µm with Boston, 0.263 ± 0.12 µm with Senso Select, and 0.304 ± 0.10 µm with Wohlk contact lens (P-value= 0.001). The mean RMS for low order aberrations decreased from 1.480 ± 0.78 µm before fitting to 0.703 ± 0.43 µm with Boston, 0.802 ± 0.39 µm with Senso Select, and 0.760 ± 0.45µm with Wohlk (P-value less then 0.0001). Conclusion Despite achieving optimal fit and good visual acuity with these different RGP lenses, in keratoconus patients, their performance is different in reducing ocular aberrations.Objective To determine bacteria obtained from eye infections, both resistance and minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) to gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, tigecycline, linezolid and imipenem, in vitro. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study was undergone with 50 samples from 50 eyes of patients diagnosed with keratitis or endophthalmitis, who came to a consultation at the Fundación Oftalmológica de Santander (Floridablanca, Colombia) from August to November 2014. The MICs of the isolated microorganisms were established through Etest® strips (BioMérieux SA, Marcy-l'Etoile - France). Results Of the 50 samples in total, 17 different bacteria species or groups were isolated. The main isolate for gram-positives was Methicillin Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus (17 samples), and for gram-negatives was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6 samples). The susceptibility percentages sorted from highest to lowest for gram-positive isolates (n=38) were imipenem 90.3%, linezolid 87.9%, tigecycline 78.1%, gatifloxacin 68.8% and moxifloxacin 68.
