This comprehensive literature review targeted the identification of the best stethoscopes in the healthcare industry. A variety of benchmarking methods were evaluated, with the aim of highlighting improvement opportunities in current models and developing a common standard for assessing the quality of stethoscopes. The burgeoning field of telemedicine, alongside the ongoing evolution of wearable sensors and modern communication systems like 5G, also includes discussions on the potential utility of digital stethoscopes. Due to the forward momentum of advancements in wearable technology, telemedicine, and smart hospitals, understanding the digital stethoscope's merits and drawbacks is paramount, particularly during the height of the current COVID-19 pandemic and in future healthcare crises when human and resource mobility becomes a significant obstacle.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial increase in the rate of rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM), an invasive fungal infection with a deadly outcome, is apparent. To ensure appropriate management of ROCM cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a valuable tool for early diagnosis. This study focused on describing the characteristic MRI presentations of ROCM in post-COVID-19 patients, intending to aid in earlier detection and treatment of this condition in these patients. A single hospital-based retrospective descriptive study examined 52 COVID-19 patients diagnosed with ROCM (histologically confirmed). These patients were referred for paranasal sinus MRI due to presenting sino-orbital symptoms. Two radiologists reviewed all the MR images, reaching a consensus. The histopathological examination resulted in the confirmation of the diagnosis. The maxillary sinus was the overwhelmingly most frequent location of paranasal sinus (PNS) involvement (962% of cases). The black turbinate sign on post-contrast imaging, a marker for multiple sinus involvement, was evident in a significant proportion (577%) of patients. The presence of extrasinus was evident in 43 patients who also had orbital involvement. Four patients exhibited involvement of the pterygopalatine fossa. Three patients' scans revealed cavernous sinus extension, while two showed pachymeningeal enhancement, and one patient exhibited an epidural collection. In two cases, the alveolar margin suffered damage, while five more patients experienced a spread to the buccal region. Radiologists' understanding of the characteristic MRI appearances of ROCM in post-COVID-19 patients enables early detection, timely and effective management, and the avoidance of adverse health outcomes.

Isotretinoin use for five months in a previously healthy 18-year-old male was associated with the development of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and concomitant renal infarction, ultimately causing heart failure. Seeking treatment at our emergency department, a patient with a history of acne vulgaris complained of left iliac fossa pain and effort dyspnea. A trans-thoracic echocardiogram displayed dilated cardiomyopathy, with the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) critically low at 29%. Hospitalized patients underwent a total body computed tomography (CT) scan that showed an ischemic injury to the left kidney. It was determined that there were no instances of DCM resulting from ischemic, autoimmune, infective, or heritable factors. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) findings indicated late gadolinium enhancement, concentrated in the circumferential mid-wall portion of the left ventricle. Promptly initiated and progressively intensified heart failure therapy did not result in significant improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) over the treatment period. Our study seeks to emphasize the necessity of public awareness regarding life-threatening, rare cardiovascular events potentially linked with isotretinoin. In our current database, this is the first documented case of renal thromboembolism and severe dilated cardiomyopathy that necessitated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation, arising during isotretinoin treatment.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the value of radiomic features from the myocardium (MYO) and papillary muscle (PM) for the identification of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and the discrimination between hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hypertensive heart disease (HHD). The analysis included 345 subjects who underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) tests. The 3D radiomic features from the MYO and PM were determined after quality control and manual segmentation. The data's random division yielded a 70% training portion and a 30% testing portion. Feature selection procedures were applied to the training data set. The performance of five machine learning algorithms was scrutinized in the detection and differentiation tasks, using MYO, PM, and MYO+PM characteristics. Employing CMR parameters and combined features, a further evaluation of the optimal differentiation model was undertaken. Six features were chosen from the results, for the MYO, PM, and MYO+PM groups, respectively. In terms of both detection and differentiation, support vector machine models proved to be the most effective. In the MYO group, the highest area under the curve (AUC) for LVH detection was 0.966. The MYO+PM group showcased the superior ability to differentiate HCM from HHD, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.935. In differentiating cases, radiomics models exhibited a significantly superior performance to that of CMR parameter models (p = 0.002).
