Players got the ball going up at up to 60 miles an hour. The ball was up to 8 pounds of solid rubber. So you can imagine you had to wear a lot of protective gear. Speaking of rubber, did you know that the sap of the rubber tree is not elastic? A ball made from it would simply shatter when it hit a solid surface, but the ancient Aztecs discovered how to make it springy by mixing it with the sap of the morning glory plant. You can try yourself with materials from your own backyard. You do not have a rubber tree? Well, that is the way the ball bounces!
