This study sought to explore labor and delivery (L&D) nurses' experiences caring for women undergoing induction for intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) or termination for fetal anomalies, and to characterize reluctance towards participation in abortion care or - conversely - the commitment to provide services.

Researchers conducted a qualitative study that consisted of open-ended, semistructured interviews with 15 registered nurses who care for women on L&D at a large metropolitan hospital. We analyzed these data for content and themes.

Labor and delivery nurses struggle emotionally, logistically, and morally with bereavement care, whether their patients are experiencing an IUFD or termination for fetal anomalies. The analysis generated the following themes the emotionally intense work of perinatal loss, feelings of incompetence in bereavement care, ethical conflicts, and judgment of both termination and IUFD patients. In addition, nurses who chose to provide care for patients undergoing induction patients are experiencing an IUFD or termination for fetal anomalies. Instituting interventions - like interdisciplinary simulation - to support nurses in bereavement care may increase the number willing to participate in abortion care, thereby improving patient access.
To document medication abortion clinical practice changes adopted by providers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Longitudinal descriptive study, comprised of three online surveys conducted between April to December, 2020. We recruited sites from email lists of national abortion and family planning organizations.

Seventy-four sites opted to participate. We analyzed 55/74 sites (74%) that provided medication abortion and completed all three surveys. The total number of abortion encounters reported by the sites remained consistent throughout the study period, though medication abortion encounters increased while first-trimester aspiration abortion encounters decreased. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, sites reduced the number of in-person visits associated with medication abortion and confirmation of successful termination. In February 2020, considered prepandemic, 39/55 sites (71%) required 2 or more patient visits for a medication abortion. By April 2020, 19/55 sites (35%) reported reducing the with the abortion, reducing in-person screenings, relying on telehealth, and implementing remote follow-up.

Mexican pit viper antivenoms have shown low immunoreactivity against crotamine, which is an urgent quality to be improved. The objective of this work was to evaluate the ability of a novel recombinant fusion protein composed of sphingomyelinase D and crotamine, and two whole venoms from Crotalus molossus nigrescens and C. KPT330 oreganus helleri to produce neutralizing antibodies against crotamine. These immunogens were separately used for immunization procedures in rabbits. Then, we generated three experimental antivenoms to test their cross-reactivity via western-blot against crotamine from 7 species (C. m. nigrescens, C. o. helleri, C. durissus terrificus, C. scutulatus salvini, C. basiliscus, C. culminatus and C. tzabcan). We also performed pre-incubation neutralization experiments in mice to measure the neutralizing potency of each antivenom against crotamine induced hind limb paralysis. Our antivenoms showed broad recognition across crotamine from most of the tested species. Also, neutralization against crotamine paralysis symptom was successfully achieved by our three antivenoms, albeit with different efficiencies. Our results highlight the use of crotamine enriched venoms and our novel recombinant fusion protein as promising immunogens to improve the neutralizing potency against crotamine for the improvement of Mexican antivenoms.Despite the biological relevance and abundance of non-front-fanged colubroid snakes, little is known about the medical significance of the majority these species. Herein, we described bites by two green racer species of colubroid snakes, with respect to clinical, epidemiological, and biological features. We retrospectively analyzed proven cases of Philodryas olfersii and Philodryas aestiva bites. Only cases in which the causative animal was brought and identified by an expert were included. Analysis included variables related to the snake, patient demographics, clinical findings, whole blood clotting time (WBCT20), and treatments. Total 155 medical records were analyzed, of which 141 and 14 patients each were bitten by P. olfersii and P. aestiva, respectively. Most bites occurred in spring and summer seasons, predominantly during daytime. Most snakes were female and adult. Bites by P. olfersii adults were more frequent in summer (p less then 0.001) and spring (p less then 0.001). The hands were most frequently bitten by P.
