Hamza, Peygamberimizin amcalarındandır. Süveybe’den O da emdiği için, Rasûlullah (s.a.s.) ile süt kardeştir. Mekke Devri’nin 6’ıncı (616 M.) yılında Müslüman olmuştur.
Peygamberimiz bir gün “Safâ” tepesinde otururken yanından Ebû Cehil geçti. Rasûlullah (s.a.s.)’e çirkin sözlerle hakarette bulundu. Peygamberimiz hiç bir karşılık vermedi.
Hamza o gün ava gitmişti. Dönüşünde, bir câriye, olayı Hamza’ya anlattı. Hamza henüz Müslüman olmamıştı. Yeğenine hakaret edilmesine dayanamadı, silahını çıkarmadan, derhal Kureyşin toplantı yerine gitti. “Kardeşimin oğluna hakaret eden sen misin?” diyerek yayı ile Ebû Cehil’in kafasına vurup yaraladı. Ebû Cehil, “Hamza Müslüman oluverir” korkusu ile ses çıkarmadı.
Ebû Cehil’den, Peygamberimize yaptığı hakaretin öcünü alan Hamza, Rasûlullah (s.a.s.)’e giderek O’nu teselli etmek istedi. Rasûlullah (s.a.s.)’in ancak imân etmesi ile memnûn olacağını söylemesi üzerine, şehâdet getirip Müslüman oldu.
Hz. Hamza son derece cesûr, kuvvetli, gözünü budaktan sakınmaz bir kişiydi. Kendisinden üç gün sonra da Ömer Müslüman oldu. Bu ikisinin Müslüman olmalarıyla, Müslümanlar büyük destek buldular.
