Introduction While most countries require health warnings on cigarette packs, the Scottish and Canadian Governments are considering requiring health warnings on cigarette sticks. Methods Twenty focus groups were conducted in Glasgow and Edinburgh (Scotland) with smokers (n = 120) segmented by age (16-17, 18-24, 25-35, 36-50, >50), gender and social grade, to explore perceptions of cigarettes displaying the warning 'Smoking kills' on the cigarette paper and any demographic differences in how smokers responded to these. Results A warning on each cigarette was thought to prolong the health message, as it would be visible when a cigarette was taken from a pack, lit, left in an ashtray, and with each draw, and make avoidant behavior more difficult. That it would be visible to others was perceived as off-putting for some. It was felt that a warning on each cigarette would create a negative image and be embarrassing. Within several female groups they were viewed as depressing, worrying and frightening, with it suggested that people would not feel good smoking cigarettes displaying a warning. Within every group there was mention of warnings on cigarettes potentially having an impact on themselves, others or both. Some, mostly younger groups, mentioned stubbing cigarettes out early, reducing consumption or quitting. The consensus was that they would be off-putting for young people, nonsmokers and those starting to smoke. Conclusions Including a warning on each cigarette stick is a viable policy option and one which would, for the first time, extend health messaging to the consumption experience.
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a deadly human malignancy, and previous studies support the contribution of microRNAs (miRNAs) to cancer assessment. It has been reported that miR-1231 can be used as a biomarker to assess prognosis in different cancers. However, the prognostic value of miR-1231 in NSCLC patients with comorbid diabetes mellitus (DM) remains unclear. The present study evaluated the risk factors for NSCLC with DM and developed a predictive model for it.
A real-world study was conducted, including data from 108 patients with NSCLC combined with DM from April 1, 2010, to June 1, 2015. MiR-1231 was recorded during hospital admission. Cox-proportional hazards model was applied for survival analysis of risk factors for cancer-related mortality and to create nomograms for prediction. The accuracy of the model was evaluated by C-index and calibration curves.
The mortality rate in the high miR-1231 level (≥ 1.775) group was 57.4%. On the basis of univariate analysis, we put factors (P < 0.05) into multivariate regression models, and high miR-1231 levels (P < 0.001, HR = 0.57), surgery (P < 0.001, HR = 0.37) and KPS score > 80 (P = 0.01, HR = 0.47) had a better prognosis and were considered as independent protective factors. These independently relevant factors were used to create nomograms to predict long-term patient survival. Nomogram showed good accuracy in risk estimation with a guide-corrected C-index of 0.691.

Nomogram based on multivariate analysis showed good accuracy in estimating the overall risk of death.We propose a new theoretical kinetic model of strength recovery by oxidation-induced self-healing of surface cracks in composites containing a healing agent (HA). The kinetics is a key parameter in the design of structural components that can self-heal the damage done in service. Based on three-dimensional (3D) observations of crack-gap filling, two crack-gap filling models, i.e., a bridging model and a tip-to-mouth filling model, are incorporated in the proposed kinetic model. These crack-gap filling models account for the microstructural features of the fracture surfaces, crack geometry, and oxidation kinetics of the healing-agent. Hence, the minimum and maximum remaining flaw sizes in the healed crack gaps are estimated for various healing temperatures, times, and oxygen partial pressure conditions. Further, the nonlinear elastic fracture mechanics suitable for small-sized remaining flaws, together with a statistical analysis of the original Weibull-type strength distribution, enables the prediction of upper and lower strength limits of the healed composites. Three sintered alumina matrix composites containing silicon carbide (SiC)-type HAs with various volume fractions and shapes, together with monolithic SiC ceramics, are considered. This theoretical approach can be applied to HAs other than SiC and enables the design of self-healing ceramic components for various applications.Silver selenide nanoparticles have advantages of low cytotoxicity, desirable near-infrared light response characteristics, and easy surface modification, which attract increasing attention in chemo-photothermal therapy and nursing care of cancer patients. In this contribution, we synthesized Ag2Se nanoparticles modified by the surfactant of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) using a ligand exchange strategy. Their microstructure and composition were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray Photo-electronic Spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The CTAB modified Ag2Se nanoparticles exhibited a uniform diameter distribution centered at ~12 nm. In order to investigate the photothermal and adsorption effects of CTAB-Ag2Se nanocomposites, we also prepared sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) modified Ag2Se nanoparticles to make a comparison. The CTAB-Ag2Se nanoparticles showed high photothermal properties, a photothermal conversion efficiency of 20.1% and a high drug adsorption performance of 48.2 μg/mg. Importantly, the CTAB-Ag2Se-DOX presented an MCF-7 cell activity of only 27.3% under near-infrared radiation. The results revealed that the surface-modified Ag2Se nanoparticles with CTAB had stronger antitumor ability.
