Keteleeria fortunei var. cyclolepis is an ideal tree species for mountain afforestation, timber forests, and landscaping. Its pollination process can be affected by the rainy season, making it difficult to pollinate the massive female cones, which leads to a high abortion rate and low quality of seeds. Here, we observed the pollen morphology of K. f. cyclolepis using scanning electron and light microscopes, investigated the characteristics of its in vitro germination by the detached method, and explored the effect of different storage temperatures and times on the pollen germination rate and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT). Our results indicated that the pollen of K. f. cyclolepis is a five-cell pollen, comprising one noumenon and two air sacs, both of which were oval in polar view. The optimal condition for pollen germination of K. f. cyclolepis was 240 g/L sucrose + 70 mg/L CaCl2 + 210 mg/L H3BO3 at 24 °C and pH 6.0, resulting in a germination rate of 45.0%. The effects of different storage temperature and time on pollen germination rate varied significantly. The best storage temperature was - 80 °C, at which the germination rate was 20.9% after 365 days of storage, and the activity of three protective enzymes remained relatively high, representing relatively strong antioxidation and antiaging activity. Stepwise regression analysis showed that SOD was the main factor affecting the pollen germination rate of K. f. cyclolepis. The function of the three protective enzymes differed under various temperatures, for example, SOD served as a sensitive protective enzyme at room temperature, - 20 °C and - 80 °C, whereas both SOD and CAT served as sensitive protective enzymes at 4 °C.Somatostatin receptor 2a (SSTR2a) is an important diagnostic and scintigraphic marker in several tumors, as well as a potential therapeutic target. However, the expression and clinicopathologic significance of SSTR2a in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain unknown. The expression of SSTR2a was retrospectively analyzed in a large series of NPC tissue samples (106 primary NPC samples, comprising 99 primary non-keratinizing NPC (NK-NPC) and 7 keratinizing NPC (K-NPC) samples, and 41 metastatic NPC samples) by immunohistochemistry, with 24 cases of normal nasopharyngeal mucosa tissues used as a control group. Normal epithelia in nasopharyngeal mucosa were negative for SSTR2a in all 24 cases. The expression of SSTR2a in primary NPC was correlated to the histological subtype. Most cases of primary NK-NPC showed expression of SSTR2a (93.9%, 93/99 cases). The percentage of SSTR2a-positive tumor cells ranged from 10 to 100%, while the intensity ranged from 2+ to 4+. None of the primary K-NPC samples showed SSTR2a expression (0/7, 100%). All cases of NPC showed negative expression of other neuroendocrine markers, including synaptophysin, chromogranin A, and CD56. Of all 41 cases of metastatic NK-NPC lesions, SSTR2a expression is concordant with that of the primary lesions, which shows statistical significance (p less then  0.001). Our observations expand the spectrum of recognized SSTR2a-positive tumors and demonstrate for the first time that SSTR2a is frequently expressed in primary and metastatic NK-NPC, highlighting its potential as a scintigraphic and therapeutic target in this disease.BACKGROUND AND AIMS NAFLD is the most prevalent liver disease globally, affecting 20% of the world population. Healthcare resource utilization (HRU) attributable to NAFLD has been difficult to define. METHODS We performed a case control study on NAFLD patients from 2005 to 2015 in a large integrated healthcare system with an affiliated insurance company that prospectively captures HRU information. Outcomes encompassed costs, liver transplantation and mortality rates. RESULTS There were 17,085 patients, of which 4512 were NAFLD cases and 12,573 were non-NAFLD controls. The cohorts were similar in age and gender distribution (p > 0.05). The NAFLD cohort had a younger mean age of death (60.9 vs. 63.3, p = 0.004) and had over twice the number of annual healthcare visits (14.6 vs. 7.1). Inhibitor Library The increased overall annual overall cost attributable to NAFLD (in 2015 $) was $449/year. Overall, NAFLD was independently associated with 17% higher annual attributable healthcare costs. More advanced NAFLD (FS 3-4) was associated with a 40% increase in median annual healthcare costs (vs. FS 0-2). The strongest predictors of HRU among patients with NAFLD were advanced fibrosis and medical co-morbidities. The rate of liver transplantation was 18 times greater (0.054%/year) in the NAFLD compared with the non-NAFLD cohort, while mortality rate was 1.7 times greater. CONCLUSIONS Within a large, integrated healthcare system a diagnosis of NAFLD is independently associated with a 17% overall excess in HRU and a several-fold increase liver transplantation and mortality. Although the dollar amounts will change over time and between healthcare systems, the proportional need for HRU will have broad applicability and implications.Vascular parkinsonism (VaP) is a term used to describe a parkinsonism of vascular cause. However, only ischemic or hemorrhagic lesions in the substantia nigra or nigrostriatal pathway, leading to a reduction of dopaminergic stimulus are pure VaP. Here, we report a case of true VaP due to nigrostriatal pathway stroke with accumulation of neuromelanin in Substantia nigra. This is the first description of neuromelanin accumulation from nigrostriatal damage. Also, it can help to understand the physiopathological changes in VaP.INTRODUCTION Coffee fermentation has been reported as one key process in aroma and flavor development of coffee. However, natural fermentation often results in inconsistent quality of coffee. In this study, second fermentation using isolates from feces of civet (Luwak) and Cilembu sweet potato were used to improve the quality of Arabica green coffee beans. OBJECTIVES The aim of this research was to improve the quality of various Arabica coffee from different origins in Indonesia by controlled-second fermentation. METHOD The Arabica coffee beans used in this study were from three origins in Indonesia Kintamani-Bali (I), Aceh-Gayo (II) and Nagarawangi-Sumedang (III). The second fermentation was done using three bacterial isolates coded as BF5C(2); UciSp14; and AF7E which belong to Bacillus genus. Quality assessment of fermented coffee was performed by cupping test following Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) protocol by licensed Q graders, GC/MS metabolite profiling, and total polyphenol content measurement.
