Significantly, this synthetic route allows the achievement of 30-inch-scale uniform N-doped graphene glass, thus promoting its applications as excellent electrodes in high-performance switchable windows. Additionally, such N-doped VG films were also employed as efficient electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction.A tris(alkoxo)pyridine-augmented Wells-Dawson polyoxometalate (nBu4N)6[WD-Py] (WD = P2V3W15O59(OCH2)3C, Py = C5H4N) was functionalized with phthalocyaninato metal moieties (MPc where M = Y or Yb and Pc = C32H16N8) to afford (nBu4N)4[HWD-Py(MPc)] compounds. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to detect and identify the hybrid assembly. The magnetism studies reveal substantial differences between M = Yb (monomeric, single-ion paramagnetism) and M = Y (containing dimers, radical character). The results of electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and magnetochemical calculations indicate the presence of intramolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety to the polyoxometalate and of intermolecular charge transfer from the MPc moiety of one molecule to the polyoxometalate unit of another molecule. These compounds with identified VIV ions represent unique examples of transition-metal/lanthanide complex-POM hybrid compounds with nonphotoinduced charge transfer between electron donor and acceptor centers.Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), metal nanoparticles, and cellulose paper are materials with numerous applications in bioanalysis and beyond. The functional properties of QDs and metal NPs are substantially different than those of cellulose, such that their integration with cellulose paper is potentially enabling for many applications. Here, we characterize and evaluate multiple chemistries that modify cellulose paper substrates for the affinity-based immobilization of QDs, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), and platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). SBP-7455 solubility dmso These chemistries include grafting of cellulose fibers with imidazole and dithiol groups, as well as the aminosilanization of cellulose fibers (both with and without subsequent grafting with dithiol groups). Cellulose modifications and nanoparticle immobilization are characterized by multiple techniques, including, but not limited to, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and optical imaging, extinction, and fluorescence measurements. We demonstrate the on-paper immobilization of color-tuned mixtures of QDs, on-paper patterning of QDs by microcontact printing, and post-immobilization enhancement of energy transfer and model assays of protease activity. The robustness of QD photoluminescence is also evaluated between immobilization chemistries. Paper-immobilized Au NPs and Pt NPs are evaluated as potential substrates for SERS and as supported catalysts for a model decolorization reaction. Our cumulative results indicate that there may not be a one-size-fits-all immobilization chemistry. Instead, the immobilization chemistry should be tailored and optimized for the downstream application. For metabolic engineering approaches, fast and reliable tools are required to precisely manipulate the expression of target genes. dCas9 can be fused via RNA scaffolds to trans-activator domains and thus regulate the gene expression when targeted to the promoter region of a gene. In this work we show that this strategy can be successfully implemented for the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris. It is shown that the thiamine repressible promoter of THI11 can be activated under repression conditions using a scgRNA/dCas9 construct. Furthermore, the RIB1 gene required for riboflavin production was activated, leading to increased riboflavin production exceeding the riboflavin titers of a conventional RIB1 overexpression with a pGAP promoter.Nitrite oxidation is the primary pathway that generates nitrate in engineered systems. However, little is known about the role of a novel nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) genus Candidatus Nitrotoga in activated sludge systems. To elucidate key factors that impact NOB community composition, laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) were designed and operated under the same conditions as real wastewater treatment plants to achieve considerable nitrogen removal and similar community; then, different conditions including temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO), free nitrous acid (FNA), and free ammonia (FA) were applied. The 16S rRNA gene-based PCR and sequence analysis illustrated that Ca. Nitrotoga were abundant even at ambient temperature, thus further challenging the previous conception of them being solely cold-adapted. Ca. Nitrotoga are less competitive than Nitrospira during oxygen deficiency, indicating its lower affinity to dissolved oxygen. Ca. Nitrotoga are the dominant nitrite oxidizers under regular exposure to FNA and FA due to their relatively higher resistance than other NOB toward these two effective biocides. Therefore, this study demonstrates that Ca. Nitrotoga can play an important role in biological nitrogen removal and also highlights the need for multiple strategies for NOB suppression for the next-generation, shortcut nitrogen removal.Polyoxometalate-based MOFs afford a great opportunity in terms of water oxidation. Herein, a new PMOF (SYNU-1) has been constructed with active CoMoO4 layers and TPPE ligands. In SYNU-1, each TPPE ligand bridges eight Co(II) and Mo(VI) cations to give a 3D (3,4,5)-connected (62·83·10)(63)(65·85) framework. SYNU-1 CPE exhibits electroreduction toward nitrite and bromate. Furthermore, SYNU-1 catalyst demonstrates electrocatalytic OER activity with a low overpotential of 364 mV. Strikingly, the heterogeneous catalyst SYNU-1 shows a high O2 yield (79.05%) for visible light water oxidation with good stability and reusability.Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which has affected millions of people worldwide. Considerably lower prevalence and fatality rates resulting from COVID-19 are reported in Africa and Asia than in the industrialized world. In this Viewpoint, we discuss the possibility that this intriguing phenomenon could be, among other factors, due to protective immunity of the oligosaccharide galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal). The α-Gal immunity induced by gut microbiota that express the same glycan modification may prevent COVID-19 through the activation of different mechanisms involved in SARS-CoV-2 neutralization and the downregulation of the inflammatory response in the lungs of infected patients.
