I think when at the beginning the child is wearing the crown and it's covering her eyes, she's blinded by the good things and the privilege she has because she's just a kid(rihanna as a young star). Older rihanna is drowning herself at that point but sees the kid blinded and surrounded by whispers, when the kid calls out for help - she comes out to help the kid see the real world, when she takes the crown - the kid is transforming into rihanna. And when rihanna takes the crown the world goes black and she realizes it's even darker now because of the crown, but she finds her way and unlocks peace which is guarded by several people. The ending scene is where in privacy she can be who she was and be free and be the child and herself.
