Cleaning Robot Mop and Vacuum Combo
The majority of robot vacuums and mops come with an app that allows you to save maps of your house, set cleaning schedules, and choose mopping modes. Some models that have dual rotating pads can also return to the dock to clean their brushes and empty dirty water.
If your model is using pads that are reusable, take them off and wash them (if safe) every few cleaning cycles to prevent bacteria buildup. You'll also want to scrub down the resting tray where they sit between cleanings.
Preparation
Many robot mops have pads that are soaked in cleaning solution and then move across the floor, either by scrubbing or brushing to get rid of the sticky spots and other marks. To stop bacteria from building up and to prevent them from smelling, the pads must be removed and washed between use (if they can be washed). Some models have brushes on the bottom and sides of the robot that also need to be cleaned, rinsed or replaced after a few cleaning cycles.
The best 2-in-1 robot mop/vacuum combos are easy-to-use and come with features that reduce the amount of maintenance needed after cleaning. These include automatic emptying of the dustbin docks that self-clean and self-cleaning pads that ensure your robot is ready to mop again almost immediately after a cleaning cycle. If you want your robot's sensors to to navigate around obstacles, clean them using a soft towel or cloth every few cycles. This will remove dust that can hinder sensors and cause errors.
Choose a mop that is suitable for carpets if have them. Robot mops that can clean or vacuum floors need to be reprogrammed so they can avoid carpets. Certain robotic vacuum cleaners and mop cleaners come with mapping features. This lets you see the areas that your robot has cleaned, as well as those it hasn't.
The majority of app-connected robot mop use sensors to navigate through the home and avoid obstacles, but can sometimes become confused or lost. Update the mopping app regularly with new software releases to ensure that your robot is equipped with the most effective navigation and obstacle-avoidance abilities. Before you purchase a robot, we recommend creating an obstacle course at your home to test its performance.
The majority of robot mops have two tanks: one for clean water and the second for dirty water. The dirty tank has to be filled and emptied regularly. The tanks can be lifted off the base which makes it easier to clean them and rinse them with mild soap and warm water. Most models come with a drip tray underneath the tank that collects any liquid that spills. It is recommended that you empty your drip tray after every cleaning cycle to stop bacteria from developing.
Cleaning the Water Tank
The majority of robot mops, vacuum/mop combinations and robot mops use a reservoir of water for cleaning. The majority of manufacturers recommend cleaning the tank on a regular basis, depending on the frequency you use your robot. If you want your bot to last for a long time, this is essential. Some brands, like the top choices in our ratings include washable, removable tanks, allowing you to wash off the water that is dirty and let the tank dry between cleaning sessions.
Most of the mop-vacs we tested come with an app which lets you save your home's maps, organize cleaning schedules or choose cleaning modes. This is one of the features we look for when choosing the right model, since it makes the process of setting up and using your robot cleaner much easier. If the model you choose doesn't come with an app, you can still manage the basic functions of the bot from the dock or via its remote.
All the newer models that we've tested can vacuum up dirt and dust on a variety of surfaces. This is a big improvement over previous versions of robot cleaners, that mostly passed water pads across the floor. However they're not designed to deal with big spills, which have to be cleaned manually. They also cannot handle furniture and can get confused in rooms with lots of clutter on the floor, so be sure to straighten up the space before mopping to ensure that the machine can move around it easily.
Some of the latest bots come with brushes on the bottom and sides which can be removed and laundered So, be certain to follow the instructions of the manufacturer on how to do this (typically, you'll need a damp microfiber cloth). Sensors are also used by a majority of bots to navigate the floor and avoid obstacles. It's important to clean the sensors every couple of cleaning cycles, especially where they're pressed against the floor.
In addition, it is possible to pour other cleaners into the robot's tank (for instance vinegar or acetic acid) We recommend against using them unless the manufacturer has recommended it. This could damage the robot and could end the warranty.
Cleaning the Drip Tray
If your robot mop and vacuum combo has a dock on its own that doubles as its water tank, it will have to be cleaned periodically. The dock can collect dirt, grit and other debris that will need to be cleaned out and removed once the mop is done. Many of our options come with a self-cleaning feature that you can access via the app or the button on the mop. This helps keep the tank clean and prevents mildew.
The area of the dock that washes the pads also should be cleaned from time to time -- it can get slimy or even smell bad when left wet for too long. If your model uses disposable or washable mop pads ensure you're washing them in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions between cleaning cycles. Hybrid vacuum and mop units with brushes on the sides and bottom are also affected. After every cleaning cycle take the brushes off and clean them using the help of a rag or cloth.
Some of the more advanced robot vacuums and mops we've tested include sensors that help them navigate floors and avoid obstacles, however it's still essential to clean the sensor areas clean on a regular basis. This can keep dirt and grime from obstructing the sensors and causing misjudgment.
While cheap robot vacuum cleaner and mop units require some effort they are an excellent alternative for busy homeowners. They can keep floors looking nice and reduce the need for heavy lifting and save you the most valuable resource of the home- your free time.
There are a few companies that are trying to develop better vacuum-mop machines but they're far from the quality we have. But we do expect these robots to improve with time, just as all other robot vacuums in the past.
Brushes to be cleaned
Like a vacuum cleaner is essential to maintain your cleaning robot mop and vacuum combination to ensure it is functioning well. Clean the sensors to enhance navigation. Clean and empty the water tanks, clean hairs from the brushes Clean the charge ports and change the rollers and filter in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. These tips will ensure that your robot mop and vacuum is efficient for a long period of time.
Good Housekeeping Institute Home Care & Cleaning Lab Executive Director Carolyn Forte evaluates and tests cleaning equipment in the Laboratory which includes robot vacuum and mop combos. Her team has been testing products and recommending them for more than forty years.
Combinations of mop and robot vacuum are great for tackling both dry debris (dust dirt) and wet messes (spills and staining) in one clean-up session without the need to switch machines. These multitaskers can save you time and effort and are ideal for those with a busy life.
Certain robots require an app to operate and provide more features than others, for example, a the map this model made of our obstacle course that's a big selling point. You can also use the app to schedule and modify cleaning sessions modify mopping settings and check the battery level. Certain models have hands-free operation via voice like the model that is compatible with Alexa.
If you choose to purchase a robot vacuum and mop choose a model that has the features that are important to you. While all models use a pad of water across floors, some include scrubbers that can be used to clean grout, or an inclined brush roll to provide more vigorous scrubbing. Some have filters that can be cleaned or replaced to reduce the odor.
Some mopping robots drop their dirty pads into the base, which then automatically empty them into a waste bin, removing the need to manually clean the pads or refill the tank. Some, like the Noesis Florio, have reusable pads that you wash and dry between use. If you decide to purchase one with pads that can be reused, make sure to read the instructions of the manufacturer on how to clean and dry them.
