Furthermore, the usual exclusion criteria used in clinical trials for ADHD exclude many adults who are experiencing the most severe psychiatric symptoms, and are at greatest risk of having functional impairment. These individuals are likely to have a greater burden of psychopathology that is comorbid to the community sample ADHD groups studied in this study, yet weren't eligible for participation in the clinical trials.
The number of clinical trials of medical devices for the treatment of adults with ADHD has risen from 2009 and is growing, even though the majority of them are in the an exploratory phase and have not yet reached the pivotal phase. The growth in the number of trials that are conducted using this method may be a reflection of the increased interest in the use of these devices as an option for treatment for adults with ADHD.
