The role of nutritional therapies and the association between nutritional aspects and the outcome of patients who have undergone TP is described in some studies. The aim of this comprehensive review is to summarize the available recent evidence about the influence of nutritional factors in TP. Preoperative nutritional and metabolic assessment, but also intra-operative and post-operative nutritional therapies and their consequences, are analyzed in order to identify the aspects that can influence the outcome of patients undergoing TP. The results of this review show that preoperative nutritional status, sarcopenia, BMI and serum albumin are prognostic factors both in TP for pancreatic cancer to support chemotherapy, prevent recurrence and prolong survival, and in TP with islet auto-transplantation for chronic pancreatitis to improve postoperative glycemic control and obtain better outcomes. When it is possible, enteral nutrition is always preferable to parenteral nutrition, with the aim to prevent or reduce cachexia. Nowadays, the nutritional consequences of TP, including diabetes control, are improved and become more manageable.Recent studies have revealed that the gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy, as well as diseased condition. Various organs and systems, including the kidney, are affected by the gut microbiota. While the impacts of the gut microbiota have been reported mainly on chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury (AKI) is also affected by the intestinal environment. In this review, we discussed the pathogenesis of AKI, highlighting the relation to the gut microbiota. Since there is no established treatment for AKI, new treatments for AKI are highly desired. Some kinds of gut bacteria and their metabolites reportedly have protective effects against AKI. Current studies provide new insights into the role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of AKI.In this study, highly concentrated hydrogen nanobubble water was utilized as the blending water for cement mortar to improve its compressive and flexural strengths. Highly concentrated nanobubbles can be obtained through osmosis. This concentration was maintained by sustaining the osmotic time. The mortar specimens were cured for 28 days, in which the nanobubble concentration was increased. This improved their flexural strength by 2.25-13.48% and compressive strength by 6.41-11.22%, as compared to those afforded by plain water. The nanobubbles were densified at high concentrations, which caused a decrease in their diameter. Quantitative analysis of the hydration products and the degree of hydration were calculated by mineralogical analysis.Environmentally friendly wood plastic composites (WPC) with biobased high density polyethylene (BioHDPE) as the polymer matrix and hemp, flax and jute short fibers as natural reinforcements, were melt-compounded using twin-screw extrusion and shaped into pieces by injection molding. Polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MA) was added at two parts per hundred resin to the WPC during the extrusion process in order to reduce the lack in compatibility between the lignocellulosic fibers and the non-polar polymer matrix. The results revealed a remarkable improvement of the mechanical properties with the combination of natural fibers, along with PE-g-MA, highly improved stiffness and mechanical properties of neat BioHDPE. Particularly, hemp fiber drastically increased the Young's modulus and impact strength of BioHDPE. Thermal analysis revealed a slight improvement in thermal stability with the addition of the three lignocellulosic fibers, increasing both melting and degradation temperatures. The incorporation of the fibers also increased water absorption due to their lignocellulosic nature, which drastically improved the polarity of the composite. Finally, fire behavior properties were also improved in terms of flame duration, thanks to the ability of the fibers to form char protective barriers that isolate the material from oxygen and volatiles.Cardiovascular disease is a common diabetic complication that can arise when cardiac fibroblasts transition into myofibroblasts. Myofibroblast transition can be induced by advanced glycated end products (AGEs) present in the extracellular matrix (ECM) activating RAGE (receptor for advanced glycated end products) to elicit intracellular signaling. The levels of AGEs are higher under diabetic conditions due to the hyperglycemic conditions present in diabetics. AGE/RAGE signaling has been shown to alter protein expression and ROS production in cardiac fibroblasts, resulting in changes in cellular function, such as migration and contraction. Recently, a small GTPase, Rap1a, has been identified to overlap the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade and mediate changes in protein expression. While Rap1a has been shown to impact AGE/RAGE-induced protein expression, there are currently no data examining the impact Rap1a has on AGE/RAGE-induced cardiac fibroblast function. Therefore, we aimed to determine the impact of Rap1a on AGE/RAGE-mediated cardiac fibroblast contraction, as well as the influence isolated diabetic ECM has on facilitating these effects.
