Choosing a Large Bedside Cot
Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without risk of SIDS. They are only recommended for up to 6 months, when your baby is old enough to be moved to a crib.
Mehack Mehack, an MFM home tester, loved the feature that this model comes with an integrated bassinet that can be used throughout the house. It also has the ability to rock manually. It was also easy to put together and came in its own travel bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. They also often convert into toddler beds, while they are typically used up to three years old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. The larger of the two is a good option for children who want to sleep in it until they are +/- three.
Jasmine, an MFM mom who tried the product at home, was pleased the fact that it was a little bigger than the typical Moses basket, but not too big for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to get her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or calming and that the quality is excellent when compared to other cots she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.
Emily is another home tester, is awed by the versatility of the Maxi-Cosi Lora which is a lift-off, mobile bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands The Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy a new mattress as your baby grows. It does require a special bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.
Height
When you are choosing a cot for your bed choose one that can be raised up to a height that's comfortable for you to feed your the baby. It must also be lowered out of the way, so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or soothe him. This feature is particularly useful if you're recovering from C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch up to 70cm.
You should also consider the height you'd like the base of your crib to be. Some mums find that it is easier to lift their infants from standard Moses baskets when the base is situated at the lowest level and others prefer a higher level to provide them with more stability. One of our mum testers mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular choice. It has an easy-to-fold side that you can press at the push of a button.
Keep in mind that a bassinet/bedside sleeper is only suitable until your baby can hold their head without assistance, usually at approximately 6 months. This is due to the danger of suffocation. It's also important to know that if you select a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib it is necessary to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this to ensure they don't climb out or fall out of bed.
Design
There are many different styles of bedside cribs, from simple to luxurious. Some of the more luxurious options include features like an integrated light and a soothing center that plays music and sound and has two levels to help ease your baby back to sleep or a swivelling footrest that allows you to reach your child in order to feed them. You may also find some models that can be converted to a cot bed or toddler bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to move to a bigger bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that allows you to pick up your baby and move them to the opposite side of the crib without getting out of the bed. This is great for new mothers recovering from Caesarean births or who have to remain in bed for prolonged periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested this product at home, stated that it was easy to operate and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after the c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It was awarded Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib. It is machine washable and comes with a lining, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than the other cribs we've tested, but it folds up into its travel bag, making it compact when not in use.
Leya, MFM mum home tester also appreciated the bedside crib's function. She said it was designed to be used by parents and infants. 'It has an excellent design that is incredibly easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely sturdy. Its swivelling base is fantastic as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access - particularly for new mums who are recovering from their C-sections', she said.
bedside cot sale of a bedside cot is that it is able to be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their child when they need to feed them, soothe them, or change their nappy. This makes it ideal for mothers who still recovering from a C section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side with the press of a button, so you can easily lift your baby without getting out of bed. This is important, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation or injury, like pillows and duvets, which could cause babies to become overheated.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at least the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. The CPSC found, however that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing the number of instances in which infants are trapped by the bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents reported in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses which can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multi-use bedside beds to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as an actual bassinet.
The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into consideration these comments when it decides on the final rule, which is expected to be issued in November of 2021.
