Choosing over here (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to rest with their baby at night without fear of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months, when your baby will be ready to move to a crib.
MFM home tester Mehack loved that this model features a lift-off bassinet you can use throughout the house, as well as a manual rocking function. It was also easy to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.
Size
Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than beds for cots. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However cots are generally used for children up to the age of three. If you're considering a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes to choose from both large and standard both of which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot beds. If you wish for your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in the larger cot, it's a great idea to choose the larger one.
Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, was pleased that it was a bit bigger than a Moses basket, but not too big for her baby’s room. She says it's easy to carry her child in and out for night feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch, compared with many she's encountered that feel cheap and flimsy.
Emily is another home tester, loves the flexibility of the Maxi-Cosi lora - it is a lift-off, portable bassinet. It also rocks. It also has an incline for reflux and a machine washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. Unlike some International or European cot brands, the Lora can be fitted with South African cot mattresses so you don't need to purchase another mattress as your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the perfect mattress for your cot here.
Height
When you are choosing a cot for your bed be sure to choose one that can be raised up to a height that's comfortable for feeding your babies. It should also be able to be lowered down so that you can pull your baby closer to you during night feedings or for soothing. This feature is particularly helpful when you are recovering from a C-section. The Next2me cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to a maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot to be. While some moms find it easier to lift their babies out of the standard Moses baskets at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. One of our mom testers stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It is an easy-to-fold side that you can press at the touch one button.
Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable in the event that your baby can hold his head up with no assistance, which is typically around 6 months. This is because of the risk of suffocation. You should also be aware that when your child is old enough to convert the bedside sleeper into a cot you will have to take the sides off when they are ready to do so. This will stop them from getting out or falling out of the bed.
Design
There are many styles of cribs for bedside use, ranging from basic to lavish. The most luxurious models could include features like a built-in nightlight and a calming centre that plays sounds and music and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe baby back to sleep, or even an adjustable base that allows you to reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be converted into the toddler bed or cot (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.
For example the Tutti Bambini CoZee Air which was awarded Bronze in the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Crib, Best Cot or Moses Basket category, has an adjustable base that allows you to pick up your newborn and move them from one side of the crib to the other without needing to get up. This makes it ideal for new mums who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require bed for longer periods of time. Jasmine is an MFM mum who tested this product at home, said it was easy to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after a c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib and has a machine-washable interior, reflux incline, and rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds into its bag for travel, making it relatively compact when it's not in use.
MFM mum home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib, she explained how it was created with babies and parents in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was a great idea because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lowered to make access easier for mothers who are recovering from c-sections.
Safety
The most important security feature of a large bedside cot is that it is able to be moved up or down to allow parents to reach their baby when they require to feed them, comfort them or change their nappy. This makes it ideal for new mothers recovering from an c-section. You should choose an option that lets you lower the bed's side with a simple button press. This allows you to lift your child up without getting out of the bed. This is essential, especially as your child grows and becomes more mobile. It is also important to not add anything to the cot that increases the chance of suffocation or injury, including duvets and pillows, which can cause babies to overheat.
The CPSC's NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues, such as gaps between a bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents) as well as enclosed openings made of fabric (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC considered the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example, these products would have to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets or at least the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped between a bedside rail and an adult bed.
A majority of the incidents mentioned in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to different types of furniture, like play yards or bassinets. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative option for multi-use bedside sleepers that would enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as the bassinet.
The CPSC is examining these and other comments received in response to its NPR on bedside sleepers. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be released in November 2021.
